A Peigan trading post is constructed at the headwaters of the Bow River, (Alberta) and was abandoned in 1834. Some contend white men (Metis?) settled this year near Morley not far from old Bow Fort. Seventy-eight pack horses are needed to take supplies across the portage to Fort Assiniboine and other northern points. The herds of horses needed to support this portage are pastured at Big Lake (St. Albert) and Lac La Nonne (Alberta), guarded by one or two Metis. These Metis are also employed for the long trip to York Factory. Lac La Nonne was commercially fished by the Metis (1824) and later for a mink ranch (1947) on its east shores and to stock other lakes. A small shallow breeding lake to the east, fed the main lake. The fish were walleye, northern pike and perch. The USA army used it as a summer recreation area during the building of the Alaska Highway. They used depth charges to to improve the walleye fishing holes. They left all their equipment at the lake when they departed. Some claim a HBC post was established here in 1870 but I haven't heard that before and never encountered and ruins? Lac La Nonne became, in 1947, a favorite vacation place of the Garneau's until the 1980's. The fishing was exceptionally prolific at the time.

Small pox again ravaged the prairies, originating, this time, with an American Fur Company steam-man on the Missouri River Steamboat St. Peter. It traveled across the prairies, killing three quarters of the Assiniboine, Blackfoot, Blood, Piegan and Sarcee. The worst part of the catastrophe, Edmonton Trader (II)-John Rowand (1787-1854) said, is to have to witness so much misery without being able to do anything. A vaccination program given by the Hudson Bay Company had protected some Cree and Assiniboine. Six thousand natives, out of approximately nine thousand, perished this year. The Roman Catholic priests Francois Blanchet and Modestre Demers visited Edmonton on their way to Fort Vancouver. They are believed the first priests to visit Fort Edmonton.
Fathers Demers and Blanchet, went up the Saskatchewan, to Fort Edmonton, to
become the first Catholic Priests in (Alberta). They erected a large cross
above Fort Edmonton on the hill that now houses the (Alberta) Legislative
Buildings. They then proceeded to Jasper and
on to the Columbia River, to the Oregon Territories. At Jasper House they
encountered (I)-Colin Fraser (1805/07-1867) one of the traders.
By 1838 a considerable number of Métis had settled around Fort
Edmonton and elsewhere, in the hope of making a new life. This was caused
in part because of the great “downsizing” operation in the aftermath of the
amalgamation of the Hudson’s Bay Company with the North West Company in 1821,
many in the traditional labor force lost their jobs

October 2: At Fort Jasper they baptized 35 half-breed children. The Edmonton Metis population is growing, with most moving to Lac Ste Anne and Lac La Nonne to support themselves by fishing, hunting, raising horses and freighting. Forty Metis, however, had pitched their summer tents around Fort Edmonton. (II)-John Rowand (1787-1854) was fearful they would begin establishing winter homes and thereby become free traders, competing with the Company. (II)-John Rowand (1787-1854) wrote to Bishop Provencher of St. Boniface asking for a mission to come and take the Metis and Indian from the vicinity of the Fort. He didn't want the missionaries in his vicinity, but he wanted the Metis even less.
October 2: Father Blanchet reached Fort Jasper, named after Jasper Hawes a Hudson Bay Company trader, and reported that he baptized thirty-five Metis children. Three being the Metis daughters of (I)-Colin Fraser (1807-1867) and his Cree wife Nancy. Blanchet dit Gaudry would become the first bishop of Oregon City and his companion, Demurs, became the first bishop of Vancouver Island.

The reverend Robert Terrill Rundle, representing the Wesley Society of London, arrived 1839 or 1840 and centered at Fort Edmonton. His parish extended from Saskatoon (area of wild berry) to Jasper and Banff and to Lesser Slave Lake. Mount Rundle in Banff carries his name. Due to his failing health, he left in 1847. Fort Edmonton consisted mainly of ultra Protestant Orkneymen, who scorned the prayer book services of the English Wesleyans. Alex Piche, a Metis from Fort Edmonton, is reported to have requested that Bishop Provencher of Red River send a priest to Fort Edmonton. More likely, on a trading trip, he had made mention that the Wesleyan Missionary Rundle had set up shop at the Fort, and that it would alarm the Catholics, especially as he was aware that (II)-John Rowand (1787-1854) didn't want missionaries in his domain. (II)-John Rowand (1787-1854) invited the Gros-Ventre and Blackfoot to stop trading with the United States. The Cree and Saulteaux slaughtered thirty-eight tents containing one hundred men, women and children on their way to Fort Edmonton. Only six Cree and two Saulteaux remained in the place of bloodshed.
The Mountain Cree built the first bridge, west of the great lakes, about this year, on the Cree Trail to Fort Edmonton and later upgraded it for cart use.

The emigrants were all healthy and happy; living with the greatest abundance and enjoying the journey with great relish.".

Governor (I)-George Simpson (1787-1860) an illegitimate Scot , Peyton, Rodgers, and Amos E. Erye are at Fort Bridger.
Governor (I)-George Simpson (1787-1860) met (II)-John Rowand (1787-1854) in Fort Garry and, on July 3, started back to Fort Edmonton. The party had thirty horses and one light cart. They planned to change horses at Fort Ellice, Carton and Pitt, along the Carlton or Edmonton trail. The trip took twenty-two days. This appears to be the earliest reported use of the Red River cart between Fort Edmonton and Fort Carlton and Red River. It is most like he had Metis guides who showed him the way.
Governor (I)-George Simpson (1787-1860) writes July 26-28, 1841; "On arriving in front of Edmonton, which was on the opposite bank of the Saskatchewan, (future site of Strathcona) we notified our appearance by a volley of musketry, which was returned by the cannon of the fort. A boat was quickly despatched to convey us across the river; and on landing we found the residence of the establishment, and more particularly Mrs. Umpreville Rowand and her Metis daughters, assembled to receive us." He went on to say "Edmonton is a well-built place, something of a hexagon shape in form. It is surrounded by high pickets and bastions, which, with the battlemented gateways, flagstaffs, &c give it a good deal of martial appearance and it occupies a commanding situation, crowning an almost perpendicular part of the bank, about two hundred feet in height. The river is nearly as wide as at Carlton, while the immediate banks are well wooded, and the country behind consists of rolling prairies." This was often called the Rowand's Folly being the most pretentious house of the company west of York Factory.
Governor (I)-George Simpson (1787-1860) provided an estimate of the number of people residing in the Saskatchewan District of which Fort Edmonton was the center. His estimate is as follows:
Assiniboines 4,060
Crees 3,500
Piegans 2,450
Blackfoot 2,100
Gros Ventrers 2,100
Blood 1,750
Sarcees 350
Half-breeds 280
Saulteaux 140Total 16,730
The estimates are based on number of tents and assumed 7 people per tent.

Sinclair (1766-1818) and Nahovway Cree, worked for HBC (1841-1856) and likely

They traveled to Fort Edmonton, up the Bow River, ascended the Spray River,
crossed White Man Pass, descended the Cross River to the Kootney Calley, and
then ascended Sinclair creek the narrow Stanford Range to descend Sinclair
Canyon, (Radium Hot Springs. They passed by Lake Pend d'Oreille and
reached Fort Walla Walla on the Columbia River, October 4. That night the
fort burned down and the settlers saved the stock and effects and most of the
property was saved. They continued to Fort Vancouver, arriving October 12,
1841. Some contend the party was deserted by their Metis guide but were
guided by a Cree Indian, Mackipitoon or Crooked Arm, this is highly unlikely as
these men were season fur traders but it is likely they hired him for safe passage
through Cree Country.

July 27: Governor (I)-George Simpson (1787-1860) "On this our last afternoon, we made a tour of the farm (at Edmonton). The pasturage was most luxuriant and a large dairy was maintained. Among the cattle was a bison (buffalo) heifer, seven years of age, procured for the purpose of crossing the breed; (beefalo of the future) but every domesticated bull had always appeared to be afraid of her. Sheep could not be kept, for in addition to the severity of the climate, the packs of dogs and wolves in the neighborhood would have destroyed them. Barley generally yielded a fair return; but wheat was almost sure to be destroyed by the early frost. The garden produced potatoes, turnips and a few other hardy vegetables". Edmonton was also a great horse keeping center from 1825 onward for the Assiniboine portage trail. This trail linked the Saskatchewan River with the Athapasca waterways. The horses were not usually stabled near the fort. The horse guards usually had hundreds of horses in their charge.

Some historians suggest only 80 Metis are being supported out of Fort Edmonton this year. Kane, however, goes on to say that their employment is in building boats for the trade, sawing timber; which is rafted down river from ninety miles higher up, cutting popular for fire-wood; as eight hundred cords are consumed each winter. The women are all, without exception, either squaws or half-breed. They make moccasins and clothing for the men and convert dried meat into pemmican. He also described the great icehouse which contained seven to eight hundred bison (buffalo) carcasses. Kane painted the Cree Metis Cunnewabum; meaning one that looks at the stars and is struck with her beauty. (Alberta)

Paul Kane (1810-1871) said "the population in the eighteen-forties was not so great, about 130. The boatmen, hunters and interpreters are likely out in the field. He also noted that at Edmonton 700 or 800 bison (buffalo) per annum are consumed this year. As soon as the ice in the river is of sufficient thickness, it is cut into square blocks of a uniform size with saws; with these blocks the floor of the pit is regularly paved, and the blocks cemented together by pouring water in between them to allowing it to freeze solid. In like madder, the walls are solidly built up to the surface of the ground. The head and feet of the bison (buffalo), when killed, are cut off, and the carcass, without being skinned, is dived into quarters, and piled in layers in the pit as brought in, until it is filled up, when the whole is covered with a thick coating of straw, which is again protected from the sun and rain by shed. In this manner the meat keep perfectly good through the whole summer, and eats much better than fresh-killed meat, being more tender and better-flavoured". I witnessed this practice by farmers, near lakes, into the 1950's, they called them ice houses.
Paul Kane (1810-1871) said in 1846 described the Fort Assiniboine Trail (that passed by Lac La Nonne) condition as almost impassable, being wet and swampy. Factor (II)-Richard Hardisty wrote "...the trail to Fort Assiniboine is a very bad one. So bad that freighters won't attempt it.".

Kane found him hospitable and trustworthy, whereas the missionaries and some traders held him in low esteem. One United States trader said that he had a woman and children in every tribe. Only two wives appear on his records. (II)-John Rowand (1787-1854) said he had a tent full of women for sale this doesn't sound like Rowand unless he was kidding or it's one of the other Rowland?. (II)-Jimmy Jock (1785-1892) had no problem collecting furs on the Saskatchewan and then trading them to the United States.

(II)-John Rowand (1787-1854) did not allow most Native and Metis women to dining with the gentlemen. This is interesting given that his wife, Louis Umphreville, is Metis. But they were all welcome at the dances. It would appear that this was not a slight toward the native peoples but rather a male superiority thing, mixed with the English civilization criteria of ranking. (II)-John Rowand (1787-1854) had ample girth and his wife was three hundred and twenty two pounds. His daughter reached three hundred and thirty six pounds and his son was three hundred and fifty pounds. His daughter married (II)-James McKay Metis (1828-1879) son (I)-James McKay and Metis woman, James jr. was three hundred and sixty four pounds.
(II)-John Rowand (1787-1854) expressed concern that the Half-breeds (Metis) of Devils Lake (Lac Ste Anne) were trading and carting their furs to Fort Gary and beyond at the expense of the Company. Every half-breed is a trader who laughs at the Company (HBC) charter.
