The Boundary Bay Regional Park Bird Checklist was orginally printed in May 1995 and listed 210 species. The revised edition of this checklist includes 225 species as of May 2002. The following is a list of the bird species that have been observed in Boundary Bay Regional Park (see "area covered" above). The status of each species is indicated by an abundance level in each of four seasons. The standard four letter code is shown for each species. The species are ordered using the 7th edition of the American Ornithologists' Union (AOU) Check-List of North American Birds (AOU 1998) and its supplement (AOU 2000). Changes shown in purple include new species, confirmed breeding status addition or an abundance code added for a season not included in the original checklist. Where an abundance code has been deleted for a given season there appears a dash. When an existing seasonal abundance code has been changed it appears in red. Changes in common name or standard four letter code are shown in brown. Dyke Code of Conduct The Boundary Bay dyke was built in the 1970s by the Province of British Columbia to protect adjacent property from flooding. Today, the dyke continues to protect land from flooding while providing a valuable work and recreation corridor for many users. Please be respectful to all dyke users! Farming Activities all users must yield to farm vehicles - stand safely to the side to allow equipment to pass do not litter or trespass in farmers' fields crop spraying, cultivation and harvesting occur seasonally on lands adjacent to the dyke farmers must access some fields from the dyke - delays are expensive Recreation park in designated areas only - only authortized motorized vehicles are allowed on the dyke equestrians and cyclists approaching pedestrians must slow down and call ahead to warn of their passage dogs must be kept under control at all times Boundary Bay Wildlife Management Area respect wildlife use of this important habitat the wildlife management area (WMA) lies on the seaward side of the dyke waterfowl hunting occurs in designated areas withing the WMA from early September to mid March - contact the Surrey office of the Ministry of Water, Land and Air Protection at (604) 582-5200 for more information hunting with dogs is permitted in the WMA hunters are permitted to carry unloaded firearms on the dyke We'd like to hear from you!
