Dr. Lyle Weis is a writer, teacher, and public speaker living in Beaumont, Alberta. After a career as a classroom teacher in public schools and universities, he acted as the Executive Director of the Writers Guild of Alberta for six years. He was one of the founders of the Canadian speculative fiction magazine, On Spec.
Today he writes for both adults and young people, and offers workshops and presentations on the purpose and craft of writing. Dr. Weis is dedicated to fostering the close relationship that should exist between the arts and education:
"Students of all ages should do more than read and study literature ... they should be encouraged to create it as well. Every child and adult has a story to tell. Our job is to help them tell that story in a clear and effective way that most benefits them and their community.
In Alberta we are fortunate to have the Artists and Education program, which makes funding available to schools to help bring writers into classrooms. The Alberta Foundation for the Arts deserves praise for its role in making this goal possible."
