Mission
The Grande Prairie & District R.C.M.P. Victims’ Assistance Program Association is a community directed police-based program aimed at minimizing trauma to victims of crime or tragedy through the provision of information, support, and referrals.
GOALS
To reduce the impact of a crime/tragedy on individuals, families, and communities.
To improve awareness of victims’ rights and entitlements.
To aid in the prevention of crime and revictimization.
Some of the services we provide include:
Direct Client Service
Immediate intervention following an incident is critical particularly for victims who do not have a support base of family or friends to rely upon.
We help people when there has been: a sudden death, a sexual assault, a house fire, an armed robbery, a motor vehicle collision, family violence, a person go missing, or a home or business break-in.
Extensively screened and trained volunteer Support Workers provide the majority of direct client service and are available on a 24 hour crisis response basis.
* Active Member of the Alberta Police Based Victim Services Association.
History
Several Grande Prairie citizens attended a Canadian Victims’ Assistance Conference in May 1989. They agreed a Victims’ Assistance Program would provide significant benefits to victims, the police, and the community.
In June 1989, an interim Board of Directors was formed. The Association was incorporated as a society that September.
The Association’s name was changed in April 1996 in order to reflect the expansion of our service area.
