UNA President, Director
Injured in
Wintery Auto Accident
United Nurses of Alberta (UNA) President
Heather Smith and David Harrigan, UNA’s Director of Labour Relations were
injured in a car accident on Highway 21 north of Camrose in the last week of
November.
The two were driving back to Edmonton from a Regional Meeting in Camrose late
in the afternoon when a taxi traveling in the opposite lost control and swung
into their lane. They were hit by the car, and then subsequently hit by another
vehicle traveling behind them.
The highway was icy and slick due to snowfalls and cold temperatures in the
days before the incident.
Smith suffered multiple fractures in her arm and a broken kneecap, along with
internal injuries. Harrigan was in intensive care for 5 days with multiple
internal injuries, a serious concussion and a badly broken leg.
"Everyone at UNA was quite shocked. They are our lead negotiators,"
said UNA Vice-President Bev Dick.
"It is always unsettling. Union activists spend a lot of time on the
road, said AFL President Les Steel. "It could happen to any of us at
anytime."
