Leave a mark – Carve your name in the Medicare Tree
Are you looking for a way to show your support for public
health care in the face of the Alberta government’s latest attacks on
Medicare? Well, here’s your chance!
The Friends of Medicare is embarking on a province-wide
project to create a large public symbol representing the value Albertans attach
to our universal health system.
Edmonton sculptor Memi von Gaza is creating a series of large
metal trees which Friends of Medicare will be touring around the province this
summer. Concerned Albertans will be asked to inscribe their names and a message
on thin copper leaves which will then be placed on the trees.
"It’s a great big metal petition," says Friends
spokesperson Christine Burdett. "If we can get thousands of people signing
leaves, it will be a symbol the government won’t be able to ignore."
Friends of Medicare is hoping to install the
"forest" of large metal trees, 12 to 20 feet in height, as a permanent
public sculpture at a prominent location.
The installed sculpture will serve as a lasting symbol of the
value Albertans place on universally accessible public health care.
You can join in building this symbol of caring by signing a
leaf or by helping to distribute leaves to your union, workplace or community
