Jack
McMorran wins United Way award
Jack McMurran, Secretary Treasurer of the United Food &
Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 401 is the recipient of this year’s Jim
Shewchuk Award.
The award recognizes outstanding individual contributions to
the labour movement and the community.
An officer of UFCW and its predecessor, the Retail Clerks
International Association since 1963, Jack has a distinguished record as a trade
union leader and activist. He has served as Vice President and Recording
Secretary of the Edmonton & District Labour Council – and is one of the
key people in the success of the EDLC’s Labour Day Barbeque for the
Unemployed.
A highly successful community sports figures, Jack managed
the Safeway Seals Bantam Football team to three provincial championships.
He has been the Vice Chair of the United Way Labour Committee
since 1992 and is Chair of the Alberta Division of the Leukemia Society of
Canada.
Jack McMorran is also a long-time supporter and activist with
the New Democratic Party – where he has spent many long productive hours.
