Former Heavyweight Champ Tells
Kids to Avoid Drugs
Chuvalo will speak at two Edmonton-area schools
EDMONTON -- Former Canadian Heavyweight Boxing Champion George Chuvalo will be in Edmonton this week as part of a cross-country tour aimed at discouraging school-age children from using or experimenting with drugs.
The national tour is being sponsored by the United Food and Commericial Workers (UFCW) as a goodwill initiative and will see Chuvalo speaking to students in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. The Alberta leg of the tour is being co-sponsored by the Alberta Federation of Labour (AFL).
While in Edmonton, Chuvalo will speak to students at the following schools:

Chuvalo, who was Canadian Heavyweight Champion for 21 years, is famous for being the only boxer in the history of the sport to never be knocked off his feet -- even though he went into the ring with such formidable opponents as Muhammad Ali, George Foreman and Joe Frasier.
Since his retirement from boxing, Chuvalo has devoted his life to the campaign against drugs. In his presentations, Chuvalo describes how heroin addiction caused the deaths of three of his sons. By describing the harsh consequences of drug abuse and addiction, Chuvalo hopes to discourage young people from using or even experimenting with drugs.
Following his school appearances, Chuvalo will visit striking UFCW members on the Maple Leaf picket line.
