Cormack Expects Premier’s Address to Short Circuit on Utility Rates

AFL President Available to Comment after Premiers TV Addressicipal fiscal situation as province-wide problem that must be addressed

Alberta Federation of Labour President Audrey Cormack will be available to the media following the Premier’s TV address this evening to comment on how the address affects working people. Cormack will be watching the speech in the New Democrat Legislature office along with the New Democrat MLA’s. She will be available for media comment immediately following.

Cormack says that she is expecting little from the Premier to stop the growing problem of skyrocketing utility rates. "People’s pay cheques are being eaten up by their utility bills. Far too many families are forced to choose between which bill to pay," Cormack observes. "This is a crisis of the Premier’s making and Albertans are looking to him for a solution."

"However, I fear he won’t give us one."

Cormack notes that the Premier is too pre-occupied with tax cuts and his impending election call to seriously deal with utility rates. "The Premier thinks throwing our tax dollars back at us in the form of rebates is enough. Well it isn’t. Albertans are looking for long term answers."

Cormack will also be looking for a real commitment on health care. "While it hasn’t been in the headlines recently, health care is still the top issue to Albertans. More action is needed to reduce waiting lists and improve access to the public system – without using private hospitals."

"That, too, is something I doubt we’ll see tonight."
