AFL president available to respond to Premier’s health care address
Cormack says unions will continue to lead the fight against private hospitals

EDMONTON – The president of Alberta’s largest union organization – the Alberta Federation of Labour – will be available to answer questions from the media following Premier Ralph Klein’s address on health care this evening.

Cormack was one of the leading figures in the coalition that mobilized public opposition to Bill 37 – a piece of legislation that would have paved the way for private, for-profit hospitals in Alberta. She predicts that Klein’s television appearance will do little to ease concerns about the erosion of Medicare.

"In many ways, this evening’s televised address by the Premier is a huge insult to Albertans," says Cormack. "The government is trying once again to sell a health care model that voters have repeatedly rejected. How many times do Albertans have to say ‘no’ to private health care before the message sinks in?"

Cormack will make herself available to speak with reporters immediately following Klein’s address, which will be broadcast on CTV affiliates this evening between 6:50 and 7:00 p.m. Reporters interested in conducting face-to-face interviews can meet with Cormack at the AFL office (Rm 350, 10451 – 170 Street). Cormack can also be reached on her cell phone or on her home phone (after 8:00 p.m.).
