Unions say EI surplus should be used to help the unemployed
AFL will raise concerns about EI at pre-budget consultation meeting
CALGARY – The president of the Alberta Federation of Labour will be in Calgary tomorrow afternoon to make a presentation to the federal government’s traveling finance committee. The committee has been criss-crossing the country in an effort to solicit public input on the next federal budget.
"During our presentation we will talk about the need for increased public spending in areas like health care, education and infrastructure," says Cormack.
"But we will also be calling on the federal government to help mend Canada’s tattered social safety net. In particular, we will be calling on the Prime Minister and the Finance Minister to use the EI surplus to help the unemployed, not for debt repayment or tax reductions."
