AFL calls on union members to support
Pearson strikers
EDMONTON – The Alberta Federation of Labour is calling on union members in Alberta to avoid air travel through Toronto until the current labour dispute at Pearson Airport is settled.
In a notice faxed to unions across the province, the AFL asked union members to show support for striking workers at Pearson Airport by rearranging any travel plans that involve travel through Toronto.
"The strike at Pearson will be entering its second week soon," says AFL president Audrey Cormack. "By avoiding travel through Toronto, we can give the workers a little more leverage at the bargaining table and help them reach a settlement more quickly."
Cormack acknowledges that it may be difficult for people to avoid travelling through Toronto given that it is a major hub for air traffic. She says the AFL is simply asking people to avoid travel through Pearson where possible.
"We’re asking people to use their best judgement. If they absolutely cannot avoid travel through Pearson, we understand. But if people can avoid Pearson, or if they can postpone their trips until after the dispute is settled, then that’s what we’re encouraging them to do."
