Getting Ready
First the journey had to be laid out:

Next came the supplies:
Canned goods of all kinds, a few vegetables, cooking supplies, 24 plates, a medicine chest, a "wee" stove, one camera, two rifles (Winchester), one double-barrelled shot, one revolver, ammunition, a barometer , 1 small spirit compass, a chronometer (which lost 1/5 of a second every 24 hours), 1 small Spanish cannon - mounted and ready for firing (20 inches long and found on a beach), 100 gallons of fresh water in 2 galvanised iron tanks, 400 lbs of sand for shifting ballast, 1/2 ton of ballast, the complete works of Rudyard Kipling, a bible, one South Pacific directory from 1884 and 1 chart of the Pacific Ocean bought in a 2nd hand store and a bible.
Fitting out the Tilikum:
She was reinforced, built up and a small 5X8 foot cabin was added along with a cockpit for steering. She was rigged with three small masts and four small fore and aft sails. In all 230 square feet of canvas. The masts were stayed with small wire and all running gear led to the cockpit from where the man at the helm could set or take in all sails.
