Treat Williams
Trivia
Treat's dramatic debut was at the age of four in a local production
of Peter Pan
Treat Williams had the part of Hemingway and had shaved his head
when the film fell through. Casting would be difficult with his new
"do" and Mr. Williams took what film he could get. For this reason I
excuse him for choosing to be in "Men's Club" which is one of the
worst films I've ever had the misfortune to sit through.
In the 2nd last scene in the film "Hair" the transport plane was
ready to fly off to Vietnam. When the day came to film there was a
plane but no pilot. Treat came to the rescue and was actually the
pilot who flew the plane in the heartwrenching scene.
When Treat auditioned for the role of Berger in "Hair" there was a
problem. The character of "Berger" was owned by Jim Ragni who
originated the role. Jim wanted to play the role on film but truth was
he was too old for the character. Treat returned over and over
again, audition after audition, until finally he'd had enough. He
finally grabbed Jim Ragni one day at an audition and wrested him to
the floor, people separated them and Treat stormed out of the room.
That was what finally convinced everyone that Treat was perfect for
the role.
Along with such famous actors as Fred Astaire, Kenneth Branagh &
Emma Thompson, George Burns, Charles Chaplin, Tom Cruise &
Nicole Kidman, Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman, Rex Harrison,
Rock Hudson, Danny Kaye, Val Kilmer, Howie Mandel, Steve
McQueen, Ryan O'Neal, Brad Pitt, Robert Redford, Dick Van Dyke,
Bruce Willis, Lisa Eichorn, Greta Garbo, Judy Garland, Goldie
Hawn, Marilyn Monroe, Julia Roberts, Nicole Kidman, Joanne
Woodward...what I'm trying to say is they are all lefties. It's an
amazing collection of talent. Perhaps there's a "connection".
In the film, Where the Rivers Flow North, the actress Tantoo
Cardinal starred with Treat Williams. She is married to John Lawlor
who dated a friend of mine (Janey) in Calgary. We all worked in a
dinner theatre together. It was in Alberta that John met Tantoo. I
also saw John and Tantoo when they attended the AMPIA awards
in Calgary. The film also starred Michael J. Fox who is from British
Columbia. Poor Treat was certainly surrounded by Canadians on
that film but funny enough they all live in New England now. By
coincidence John was a cast member of "The Facts of Life" along
with Charlotte Rae who worked with Treat in the film HAIR. It's a
small world isn't it?
When Treat was filming "36 Hours To Die" on a ranch in Montreal
he found it a bit difficult to act in a serious and emotional scene
thanks to several sheep roaming free and baaing in the
background.
Treat's costar in HAIR was the actor John Savage. Both Treat and John are descendants of men who signed the Declaration of Independence. John's descendant was William Floyd.
