This
is an example of the stress analysis that Allwest Compressors performs
when designing pistons. A sectioned contour map like the one shown aids
the designer when choosing weight distribution, fillet sizing, etc.
Various operating parameters can be included in the
analysis (separately or combined). These conditions are:
Pressure
Temperature
Acceleration
Enforced Displacements
In this example, constraints were applied to the
piston hub on the right side in the washer counterbore. 100 PSI of pressure
was applied to the left face of the piston. No other external loads were
applied. The 20.5" Canadian Ingersoll Rand piston modeled consists of (2)
aluminum sections held together by (1) steel ring carrier and weighs 295
lbs. The solid magenta contour illustrates the areas of lowest stress,
with the highest stress being shown in red. In this case, because of the
low pressure application, high stress is only encountered near and around
the yellow contour. This piston shows no danger of failure thru the face
or hub.
