Neighbourhood
Watch
If you are concerned with the safety or criminal activity
in our community, please consider getting involved with the
Neighbourhood Watch Program.
Edmonton Police Service (EPS) has developed a Neighborhood
Crime Mapping Website located at http://crimemapping.edmontonpolice.ca/#
Neighborhood crime is more than just numbers; it’s about
knowing where reported crime is happening in the area where
you live. Knowing the real picture of neighborhood crime reported
to the EPS is the first step in doing something about it.
By accessing this timely and relevant information on reported
crime you will be able to know ‘what’s really
going on in our neighborhood'. By knowing what’s really
going on, you should be better informed in relation to crime
prevention decision-making. Start by selecting some or all
eight (8) crime types, select Belmead or any other neighbourhood
of interest, select a date range, and then click "Show
Crimes" to plot on the map.
Crime Reporting
- Every year thousands of crimes occur in Edmonton. Approximately
half of all crimes are reported to the police. It is likely
that more than 50% of all crimes that take place are witnessed
by neighbours looking out of their windows, by a person
walking a dog and hearing the sounds of breaking glass,
or by a driver observing a person swerving all over the
road.
- Why don't people report crime? In most cases it is because
they don't want to get involved, they are afraid of being
wrong or they are not sure what to do. A five-minute delay
in reporting crime reduces the chance of catching a criminal
by 65%. It is your duty as a citizen to report all crime.
- When we report the crimes in our Community, they become
a statistic for our area. By reporting it to the police,
it would allow patrol members to determine the problem areas
we have and allow them to give more attention to those areas.
The more we report the more we have the Police driving through
our Community making sure all is well - remember, if
you don't report... it's not a statistic!
- The emergency number for reporting a crime in progress
is 911
- The non-emergency number for complaint calls is 780-423-4567
- It is your duty as a citizen to report crime. Get involved.
Make your Community a safer place to live.
- And ask for the "event number", that way you
can call back and ask for more info later. You can share
the event number with BCL too.
The Edmonton Neighbourhood Watch Program Society is an organization
whose volunteer members practice passive crime prevention
techniques in every neighbourhood as a service to Edmonton
residents. It operates under the auspices of the Edmonton
Police Service and with the assistance of the Community League
movement. It is built on the premise of the “Block Watch”
where neighbours watch out for each other.
The Edmonton Neighbourhood Watch Program benefits its members
and their communities by:
- The use of an outbound message system (auto dialer).
- The setup of a telephone fan-out system within individual
communities.
- The distribution of printed materials regarding residential
and personal security.
- The opportunity to attend informational meetings often
within your own communities.
