This site is dedicated to those who own pre-pentium (old) machines and
who would like to optimize their use. Now, i can't personally bring
anything new or better said on the subject of surfing the internet,
computers operating in DOS, or running a small computer than the thousands
of web pages and sites already dedicated to the subject. But, I can encourage
you to save yourself alot of money, maximize resources
and save the landfills.
That's like saying that going to a friend's house
or visiting some part of the world would require a car with an
interior the size of a school bus, a minimum engine size of such
and such, new winter tires AND that there's no other way to get there.
Now if we were ALL born last night we might believe it! But each one of us has enjoyed our favorite people, places and things, on foot, on a bicycle, or in an old car. No one could ever have convinced us that there was a minimum requirement to get there... As for our work, even when they were old tools, each one of us has done a good job - thank you.
So... I recommend a computer, an internet connection, meaning a modem or network adapter of some sort or other, capable of at least 9600bps (less will also work but hard to find one of those) and some good old reliable DOS software.
Take the dust off that old 386 / 486 computer. And if you don't have one, then ask uncle Bob if you can have the one that's on the storage shelf in the basement or in the garage, or find one that's headed for the landfill. Re-load an old version of DOS, download High Performance Software (alot of it for free), and run all the practical programs that anyone might ever need to use. Try a search for 386 and Dos with your favorite search engine and the results will surprise you.
Many of the DOS programs available
are free for you to use while others are shareware. I thank the
authors for their DOS programs and I urge you to do the same. Please send
a personal email "Thank You" to freeware authors or pay for the shareware
that you decide to keep.
We, you and I, for our part, must do what we can to encourage the authors!!!
I recommend that both, freeware and shareware authors get global or local business, Chamber of Commerce or corporate sponsors to $ubsidize development, distribution and FREE use of programs - The author could place an advertisement for the sponsor in sponsor.txt file or at the beginning, end, or nag section of the software ;-)
