Spirit of a Stone © Brian Gregg

One day the spirit of a stone

appeared in the image of a man

And that was what I thought that stone to be.

I expected it to love and care like other men I know

But it didn't and my will to make it never came to be.

And I wonder now how I didn't know All that is, is never what we see.

I sing this song for people yet to be

Further on in time, five thousand and eighty-three.

Frozen heated, smashed and cracked weathered washed and worn,

The Rubble fused together and the stone was born

Now back when I lived in the twenth century

We took for granted that that, that was, was all we see

The image for our language, a conglomeration

of technical and academic jargon

against a background of media advertisement slang

But not in silence these bits of many stones fused

Unlike the thoughtless mindless life of geology's rock

In silence these bits of many stones fused.

The Babel of our many sounds left apparently forever

To chatter on from electronic storage.

I wonder what essence will emerge ?

If only you could tell me, people yet to be.

All I can do is sing this song for thee.

Further on in time, five thousand and eighty-three. ................ (back to titles)

Take off © B. Gregg

Who said the price of freedom was a broken start ?

Is this the end of the beginning or the beginning of the end ?

I think I know what's the matter with me

Its a matter of the heart

I'd like to take off your underwear

In an appropriate place somewhere

At an appropriate time too

Long long long after we

kiss and kiss

and kiss and kiss

A self declared untouchable now

You stand locked in your VIP cage

Not really any closer than if you were back

Back on the other side of the planet

I'd like to take off your underwear

Pull it right down past your travelin' toes

So close face to face, nose to nose

that when I look into your eyes I see

One .............(one eye)

But I guess I've blown most any chance of that now

Because I just don't want to drop the end of that line

Still just the same for you I'll drop it this time

You'll find me if you change your mind

I'd like to take off, please forget I mentioned it

I'll just take off and play my guitar

Still I long long long for you to kiss ................................... (back to titles)

Dumb and cruel © Brian Gregg

We are the masses the majority

We hold the power even though we can't really see

On the surface we like to seem glad

But underneath we are angry and sad

What we know most is what we can buy

We demand market forces supply

They may serve us In a way that's indirect

Trade toil for trinkets What else can we expect

Dumb and cruel running wild and free

Dumb and cruel I Know that is the way we're meant

meant to be

Go downtown have a drink in a pub

Look for a partner to give us a rub

Too bad we can't get all that we want

Always wanting to have what we caun't

Relaxing on the deck beside the pool

or doing something else that'l make us cool

Deep in our hobbies if we're not at our work

We wonder why somebody else is a jerk

Dumb and cruel running wild and free

Dumb and cruel I Know that is the way we're meant

meant to be

Now don't be too nervous to introspect

it's not uncommon to find a defect

Dr. Suzuki is sounding his alarm

Claims what we're doing is doing us harm

It is no mystery that we're bound to get mad

and feel like doing something that's bad

In our frustration we're not very nice

We'd wreck a planet and we wouldn't think twice.

Dumb and cruel running wild and free

Dumb and cruel I Know that is the way

I Know that is the way

I Know that is the way we're meant meant to be .................. (back to titles)

It's a drag ©Brian Gregg

It's a drag lovin' you, the way I do

It's a drag lovin' you, the way I do

Late at night and I'm running low

Pretty soon I'll have to go

Down to your corner and find your machine

And empty my pocket like it's always been .. 'cause

It's a drag lovin' you, the way I do

It's a drag lovin' you, the way I do

Those advertisers say you love me too

They say you love me too

It's a drag lovin' you, the way I do

You know sometimes you make me feel so good

I forget to wonder if I should

Sometimes when I use you I feel so bad

Your pleasing nasty habit's driving me so mad ..'cause

It's a drag lovin' you, the way I do

It's a drag lovin' you, the way I do

Those advertisers say you love me too

They say you love me too

It's a drag lovin' you, the way I do

It's always time to quit

Every time I try to I take a fit

Get so nervous, don't know what to do

I light up another pack of you

It's a drag lovin' you, the way I do

It's a drag lovin' you, the way I do ...................... ...... ........ ...(back to titles)

My Mother was a Commie © Brian Gregg

My Father was a capitalist. / My Mother was a Commie.

They thought and cried their ideology / Would save us like salvation

Holy market holy worker / Black or white for him and for her

No way could they / no way would they join

I'm sure some good must fall between / such opposite positions

There must be more than just one way / Perhaps some combination

Holy Freedom Holy Fairness / Some will fight and some will care less

No way, said they / no way would they join

Straight answers, to questions may I have / not simply just suggestions

from those who claim to represent, / and make the laws that rule me

Holy love n Holy hatred / Divorce divest acquire and be wed

No way, said they / no way would they join

But that could not explain / the truth of my existence

And now in turn I take a part / In seeing if it makes sense

And we became the reason why they / lived so long together slyly

Even, though they said that no way / no way could they join

My Father was a capitalist. / My Mother was a Commie. ........... .........(back to titles)

Leavin' the Livin' room © B. Gregg

In a place where the winter noon is nite

And every thing is some shade of white

Old old man, on a cold cold day

Walks off into a blizzard; suicide the Eskimo way

And as his disappearance is going along

It's said he was heard to be singing this song

Well I believe I'm leavin' the livin' room

Yes I believe I'm leavin' the livin' room

I believe I am leavin' the livin' room

Well since my baby said she ain't comin' back here anymore

I've been losing sleep. I've been cryin' on the floor

But now I'm leaving, leavin' the livin' room

goin' out to the kitchen; dance with the broom

Well if I did the suicide blues it would be the Eskimo way

I'd walk off into a blizzard when I'm old and grey

But it's too hot out now and I'm too young and I still want to see the day

When she comes back here; comes back here to stay

I'm goin' to get up off this couch. If I don't fall on the floor

I'm goin' to get up on my feet and walk right out that door

Yes I'm leavin' ... leavin' the living room

goin'' out to the kitchen. dance with the broom

Yes I believe I'm leavin' the livin' room

Yes I believe I'm leavin' the livin' room

goin'' out to the kitchen. dance with the broom

dance dance dance, dance with the broom

Come on now honey

you must be getting tired of sitting there in the closet with the dustpan

Get out here on the floor with me right now

We're going to clean up ..... ........... ............ ............ ..............(back to titles)

Heel © Brian Gregg

Well Heel you've done it again

Stepped on a buddy's toe and hurt a friend

You're so sorry now

You'd say so but you just don't know how

Every time you start to you end up foot in mouth

So worried it will it comes out wrong

Well Heel I should've guessed

You're worn out need a rest

Those long roads you've walked alone for years

Left you nowhere close except to tears

Every time you step down hard, turn and walk away

Heel you've done it again

Well Heel she can't blame you

She's not the one who nailed you to this shoe

You've been turned around and stepped on now

You'd say you're sorry but you just don't know how

Every time you start to you end up foot in mouth

So worried it will it comes out wrong

So Every time you step down hard, turn and walk away

Heel you've done it again

Yeah Heel you've done it again ... ....... ........... ............. .............(back to titles)

Emma Goldman © Brian Gregg

Emma Goldman, she's the one for me tonight

For me her company will be a great delight

She made a date with me

It's such a rare occurrence for her to be free

I didn't expect her to agree, to see me

She will speak and do what she believes is right

And read her precious books in Edgar's jails all night

She spoke to protest war

Just free speech and nothing more.

I don't know what they did it for.... what they did it for

She was exiled only to this time despise

The Russian revolution failing in her eyes.

Nowhere were the people free

Not in the church nor in the factory.

I didn't expect her to love me .... love me.

Aristotle, Jesus, Galileo .....

Were all too criminals to blind authority.

So far in history

It's been a crime to think so free

But your love Emma made me see what can be.

Emma Goldman, she's the one for me tonight

Emma Goldman, she's the one for me tonight .......

note:

Emma Goldman was a Russian Jew who at a young age emigrated to New York City in the early part of the century. She became involved as a labor leader and was jailed numerous times by J. Edgar Hoover and finally exiled back to Russia for her activities. She spent the last part of her life in Canada. This song is written from her lover's point of view.
