| CANADIAN BEEF GRADING AGENCY The face of the cattle industry in Manitoba is ever changing. Manitoba was the "Little Chicago" of the cattle industry forty years ago and in the new millennium it has reduced its volume and developed some well-defined niche markets. Maintaining a consistent standard on small volumes of beef is one of the most difficult tasks facing the CBGA in Canada. Add to this the difficulty of finding and maintaining qualified people for part-time employment and you just begin to touch on some of the challenges of delivering beef grading in Manitoba. Doug has done an excellent job of recruiting people that have a sincere desire to provide Manitoba Packers with an efficient, consistent level of beef grading. In addition we have had excellent cooperation with some of the resident inspectors. CFIA recognizes the benefits to the industry of permitting inspectors to work part time as graders. When it is feasible, having a resident inspector provide grading in his or her off-hours allows us to keep grading costs down.

Doug Carvey Regional Supervisor |
"I was raised on a mixed farm close to Brandon." "My wife and I have recently returned to live on a small farm, so once again we know all about pounding posts and stretching wire." "I started working with Agriculture Canada in the early "80's, first with the R.O.P. division, then moving to livestock as a grader and eventually becoming a supervisor." "When grading was privatized in 1996, I joined the C.B.G.A. Although Manitoba no longer has a major beef plant, there are several smaller operations where grading is performed. I am responsible for overseeing the accurate applications of grades in these plants." "Throughout the year I do a number of carcass evaluations for the Brandon Research Station and for many 4-H clubs throughout the province. I am extremely encouraged to see the improvement in the amount of marbling and the overall quality of the carcasses in the last number of years." "I believe that the future of the beef industry is in very capable hands." "If I can offer assistance, please feel free to call on me at (204) 763-4333 or (204) 792-2085 (cell)." |
