| CANADIAN BEEF GRADING AGENCY The Canadian Beef Grading Agency has been delivering the grade application on beef carcasses since April 1, 1996. Even though grading has been privatized for close to four years it is still scrutinized by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency of the Federal Government to assure consistent and accurate application of the Federal Government regulations. This federal over sight of the Agency comes in the form of National Audits performed by Tom Veale. Every year Tom travels across Canada assessing the grades applied in every region and ensuring that they are consistent.

"I was raised on a mixed farming operation in southern
Saskatchewan where we had a small feedlot and a purebred beef herd. I attended the
University of Saskatchewan in the college of Agriculture." "I started my career with Agriculture Canada in 1972 in the area of livestock grading. I progressed through the ranks of grader, grading supervisor, Regional Grades Standards Specialist and finally my current position of Chief of Livestock Grading Programs for Canada." "My responsibilities are to ensure the CBGA grader's application of the grade standards for beef, veal and bison are accurate and consistent at each grading establishment in Canada. This is accomplished by visiting establishments that are receiving grading service and auditing the grader's accuracy in the application of the grading regulations. Unlike the Canadian Beef Grading Agency graders, my employer is the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and I am ultimately responsible to the Minister of Agriculture." "It is a pleasure working with the CBGA, they are very supportive in striving toward our common goal of providing a consistent, accurate and cost efficient grading program in Canada." |
