The members of the John Cox family were rural inhabitants of King’s County, Ireland during the nineteenth century. One of John’s sons and his family relocated to Manchester, England. Some of these descendants subsequently immigrated to Canada in search of better conditions. The individuals who left Ireland found employment in varied occupations such as policeman, lithograph printer, shirt and collar manufacturer and farmer. This adventurous family made frequent trips across the Atlantic between England and Quebec. Eventually, their numerous descendants were dispersed in the County of Lancaster, England and all across Canada. It is quite possible that there are still unknown descendants of John Cox in Ireland as well.John Cox was a weaver in Clonminch Township, King’s County, Ireland. He and his wife Margaret Kelly had a number of children who were baptized at St. Catherine’s Church of Ireland in nearby Tullamore.1 They were Elizabeth (Dec 1806), Francis (Feb 1810), Sarah (Jan 1812), John (Feb 1814) and possibly Charlotte (Aug 1830).
John and Margaret Cox were alive during an era of continuing political and economic strife. Ireland joined the rest of the United Kingdom when the Act of Union became law in 1801, but many Irish citizens actively sought greater independence from Britain. Industry in Ireland remained backward compared to that in the rest of the United Kingdom, where the industrial revolution had transformed cottage industries such as weaving into urban factory operations with mass production, lower costs and greater efficiency. There was no progress due to the scarcity of capital available for investment. Furthermore, Ireland lacked the resources of good quality coal and iron to fuel industrial development.2 It is unknown how the Cox family was affected by these circumstances and by the Great Famine that began in 1845. King’s County became known as Offaly in 1922 as a result of changes made after Ireland became a republic.
Records show that John and Margaret’s son Francis was born in Clonminch Township in Jan 1810. He too was a weaver, but in about 1839 became employed by the gaolkeeper of the Tullamore Gaol. He was 5’8" tall with dark brown hair, grey eyes, and a "fresh" complexion.3 He married Mary Ann Lowe, who was christened at St. Catherine's Church of Ireland at Tullamore in Jun 1813.4 She was the daughter of Addison Lowe (Lieutenant of the 47th Regiment of Foot) and Abigail Shawe. It is said that Francis and Mary Ann eloped and fled to England when she was only sixteen years old. Her father was so angry that he hit Francis over the eye with his gold-headed cane after locating them and consequently he was scarred for life. Another story is that Lowe had him horsewhipped and that he woke up in a bog where he had been left to die.5 The children of Francis and Mary Ann were Abigail, James, Francis, William, Margaret, Charles Richard, Addison, Anne Elizabeth and Richard Thomas.
Details about the siblings of Francis are limited. Griffith’s Valuation of Ireland (1848-1864) shows a John Cox, possibly the father or brother of Francis, residing at Ballymacrossan in the Parish of Geashill, King’s County. 6 A Charlotte Cox died 1 Dec 1870 at the Tullamore workhouse, age 40.7 Her death is recorded in Tullamore's Church of Ireland Death Register, with her address given as Portarlington, Bloomfield and her age as 38.8
Francis and Mary Ann Cox and their four oldest children emigrated to the city of Manchester, Lancashire between 1839 and 1841, where Francis was employed by the County of Lancaster Constabulary Force as a policeman. This force had been founded in 1838 and Francis joined on 1 Jun 1841, making him one of the earliest Manchester policemen. In 1851, they lived at Wooley Court, Crumpsall, Manchester.9 Francis received several promotions during his more than sixteen years of employment as a policeman before his retirement on 15 January 1858, when he was pensioned for life. (See Appendix A) In 1861, he was working as a watchman and lived at 47 Springfield Road, Crumpsall.
(See Appendix D) 10In addition to the Irish-born siblings, five more children were born to Francis and Mary Ann in Manchester. It is said that some of the daughters were trained as dressmakers in Paris.11 By 1860, James Cox had emigrated to Canada and was followed by Addison, Francis Jr. and other family members over the next decades. Even Francis and Mary Ann departed from England in 1870, with the hope that a drier climate would cure Margaret, whose health was failing due to tuberculosis. Unfortunately, she did not survive the trip.
After arriving in Quebec, Francis Sr. bought a farm in the Parish of Chambly, County of Chambly in the St. Therese Concession. The farm had 170 acres with 87 acres of this improved and 5 acres in pasture. There were 3 barns/stables, 5 sleighs/carriages, 3 carts/wagons/sleds, 1 plough, 20 cords of wood, 3 horses under 3 years of age and 2 milch cows with production of 20 bushels of potatoes (1 acre) and 150 lb. butter.12 It is said that he grew millet to encourage wild game to live in the area. 13
Sadly, Mary Ann died on 4 Jul 1872.14 The funeral was held at the Cox residence at 2 PM on 6 Jul with burial at St. Stephen’s Anglican Church, Chambly, though the family was Wesleyan Methodist. Her headstone now lies flat on the ground and reads, "Sacred to the memory of Mary A. Lowe beloved wife of Francis Cox Died 4 July 1872 aged 57 years. "15 (See Appendix B)16

BELOVED WIFE OF FRANCIS COX |
After Addison’s untimely death followed in 1873, Francis sold his farm and returned to England later that year. He remarried on 9 Dec 1873 to Elizabeth Wallace, who was born in Scotland in about 1835, a daughter of William Wallace, farmer.17 The wedding took place at the Ebenezer Wesleyan Chapel at Stocks, Redbank, Manchester and the couple resided at Pendleton, Salford. In 1879, their address was 6 Albert Terrace. 18In a letter of 1884, Francis stated that he had gone to "Bran-don," Manitoba to buy an improved farm, but that it was a miserable place.19 He returned to England again and built a good house, likely at 215 W. High Street, Pendleton. From other letters Francis wrote to his son Richard Thomas, it appears that he was a devout Christian, admonishing the family to be sure to meet him some day in Heaven. He died at his home on 10 Oct 188920 and was buried in the Weaste Cemetery at Salford (Grave #1429-37).21 He left a personal estate of £34 5s. 10d. 22 to his widow Elizabeth.23 His will was witnessed by Frances Ann Dixon Cox and the executrix was Elizabeth. (See Appendix E) Elizabeth died on 9 Apr 1900 age sixty-five years of pneumonia 24 and was buried with her husband in Weaste Cemetery. The gravestone reads, "In loving memory of Francis Cox who died 10 Oct 1889 in his 80th year. With Christ which is far better. Also Elizabeth wife of the above. Died April 9, 1900 aged 65 years. At Rest. " 25

Children of Francis and Mary Ann Cox:
Abigail born on 2 Feb 183326 in Clonminch Township, baptized at St. Catherine's Church of Ireland at Tullamore in Mar 1833, 27 married John Thomas Neden in abt Nov 1855 in Manchester. 28 Her husband was born on 11 Mar 182829 at Millington, Cheshire, 30 a son of Isaac Neden and Hannah Lamb.31 They had eight children in England and evidently emigrated to Canada sometime after the birth of their last child in 1873. By May 1884 John had a smithy in Manitoba.32 The next year, Abigail and some of her children were living at her father’s home in England while John and a son were working elsewhere. In 1895, the family was found at Lakeview Farm, Virden, Manitoba.33 John died on 15 Mar 1905 and was buried Lot 1 Blk 9 Sec E of Union Cemetery, Calgary, Alberta, Canada.34 Abigail died on 21 Mar 1912 at North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.35 Children:James born in Clonminch Township, bapt in Feb 1835 at St. Catherine's Church of Ireland at Tullamore,58 seems to have emigrated to Montreal, Quebec by 1860. He was a shirt manufacturer in Montreal. James Cox, shirt and collar manufacturer, is first listed in a Montreal city directory in 1860/61.59 The marriage between James Cox and Priscilla Pollitt (born Middleton, Lancashire? abt 1838)60 occurred at St. James Wesleyan Methodist Church, Montreal on 3 Jul 1860. 61 Their children were:

Mysteriously, Priscilla and the children were living at Salford in 1881 without James. It is said that he sold his Montreal shirt factory, left and was never heard from again.65 In Jan 1904, James’ nephew Fred of England inquired on behalf of Priscilla about whether James’ death had been confirmed or not. 66
- Ann Eliza born on 1 Jun 1861, bapt on 16 Oct 1861 at Mount. Wesleyan Methodist Church, Montreal 62

(See Appendix D) They had no children. 70 He died on 13 Oct 1886 and was buried on 16 Oct at Mount Royal Cemetery in Montreal (Section B3 Grave B298A )71 after a funeral was held at his residence at 34 Aylmer Street. (See Appendix B)72 It is said that he died from accidentally swallowing pins while working at the shirt factory.73 His wife, Annie Fargher Cox, died on 24 Jan 1896 and was buried at the same location. 74 Their graves are unmarked by a headstone.75

- Frederick W. born abt 1863 at Crumpsall
- Charles T. born abt 1866 at Crumpsall
- Tom (possibly same person as Charles T.)
- James may have been born abt 1867 at Blackley, Lancashire.79
Margaret born abt 1842 at Manchester, developed health problems so other members of the family in Lancashire left for Canada, hoping a different climate might improve her serious condition. Francis, Mary Ann, Margaret, Annie and Richard Thomas sailed from Liverpool on 8 Jun 1870 aboard the S.S. Germany,82 but Margaret died at sea on 20 Jun of consumption and chronic bronchitis. This death was certified by John Graham, Master and Henry Dunbar, M.D.83 Her burial was in the Atlantic Ocean. The four remaining family members arrived at the port of Quebec on 22 Jun 1870.
Charles Richard born on 3 Jun 1846 at Springfield, Crumpsall, 84 married Martha who was born abt 1849 at Bolton, Lancashire 85 and died abt 1907.86 Charles was a coachman in 1881. He died in June 1898 and was buried at Cheetham Hill Wesleyan Chapel Cemetery. 87 Daughter:
Addison born abt Dec 1849 at Manchester,89 at age seventeen joined his sister-in-law Priscilla and her two daughters on the S.S. Austrian, sailed from Liverpool on 6 Jun 1867, and arrived at Quebec on 18 Jun.90 Tragedy struck when twenty-three year old Addison died on 23 Jul 1873. He is said to have been a shirt cutter who also died from swallowing pins accidentally. The funeral was held at his father’s residence, Chambly Canton, on 25 Jul. (See Appendix B) 91
- Mary Ann born abt 1873 at Crumpsall.88
Ann Elizabeth born abt 1851 at Manchester, may have been Ann Cox who married James Cox, shoemaker, in Montreal on 14 Aug 1875 at St. James the Apostle Church of England, although this is uncertain.92 James may have later become a shirtmaker. Children may have been:
Richard Thomas born on 4 Feb 1856 at Springfield, Lower Crumpsall, 95 married Sarah Beach, daughter of George and Isabella Beach on 25 Jul 1876 at Erskine Presbyterian Church, Montreal.96 Sarah died before 1885 of appendicitis or Bright’s kidney disease. Daughter:
- Addison Elston born on 25 Mar 1877 and bapt on 30 Oct 1877 at Sherbrooke Methodist Church, Montreal.93
- Walter born abt 1879 in Quebec.94
After the death of his first wife, Richard Thomas remarried to Annie Bella McDonald, daughter of Allan the cooper McDonald and Catherine McIntosh, on 7 May 1885 at Chalmer's Presbyterian Church in Montreal.100 She was born abt 12 July 1864 in Glengarry or Stormont County, Ont.
- Isabella Maud born on 26 Jun 1877 at Montreal,97 married Walter William Seaward (1880-1941) on 28 Jan 1902,98 died on 4 May 1945 at Sherbrooke, Que.99
Richard Thomas was employed for many years as a shirt and collar cutter in Montreal for several shirt and collar manufacturing companies including Riepert, Payne and McKay, Skelton Brothers and Company, The Standard Shirt Co. and The Gault Brothers Co. Limited. (See Appendix C) 101 He became head-cutter and it is said that he could cut through forty layers of cloth at once.102 He also had a dairy farm at Melbourne, Que. His notebook of 1892 contains a collection of horse remedies and agricultural facts from the 1890s.103
In 1905 Francis, the oldest son of Richard Thomas and Annie Bella, took out a homestead south of Lang, in southern Saskatchewan on the newly-settled prairies of western Canada.104 The rest of the family arrived at Lang on 7 Apr 1908.105 Richard Thomas homesteaded at NW 20-9-18-W2 on Rough Bark hill, about ten miles south of Lang near Forward, Sask. When neighbors met at the R.T. Cox house for church services or Sunday gatherings, he played hymns on the organ and everyone joined in the singing. One of the hymns sung was Face to Face With Christ, My Saviour. Two quarters of the farm later became community pasture and the Coxes exchanged the land for a retirement home in Yellow Grass, Sask. 106 Richard Thomas died on 2 Dec 1939 at Yellow Grass and was buried there on 4 Dec.107 Annie Bella died on 28 Jan 1958 at Regina, Sask. and was buried beside him on 30 Jan.108
