Patrick Lynch and his wife Ellen (Helen) Green were early settlers of Puslinch Township, Wellington County, Ontario. They settled southeast of the town of Guelph and began to raise a family. After the premature death of his first wife, Patrick remarried to Julia Ann (Johanna) Kennedy and had several more children.  Some Lynch descendants stayed in Ontario, while others sought opportunity in other Canadian provinces or the United States.

Activities of the Lynch family in Canada can be traced through nineteenth century records. The first mention of the Lynches is found in the church register of St. Augustine's Parish at Dundas, near Hamilton. Here, Patrick and Ellen's marriage was recorded on 10 Apr 1837. In these early years, the parish priest at Dundas traveled by horseback to parishioners scattered throughout a vast area that included Guelph;a grueling task. 2 The marriage record states that Patrick was a son of Thomas Lynch and Bridget Downey of County Meath, Ireland, and that Ellen was a daughter of Thomas Green (deceased) and Catherine Kelly of County Longford, Ireland. By this time, Ellen's widowed mother, Catherine (Kelly) Green, had remarried to Patrick Clifford, a widower. Their marriage had occurred in Guelph on 8 Nov 1832.3

Another record, the 1840 Puslinch Township, Gore District Census, includes a Patrick Linch in its nominal list.* The Gore District Census and Assessment of 1842, also lists Patrick Lynch in Puslinch Township, between John Cockburn and Hugh Cockburn. 4  The census also records that he had been in the province for eight years, which would put his approximate year of arrival at about 1834. The Ontario Archives Computerized Land Record Index names Patrick Lynch as purchaser of the south half of Lot 15 Concession 9 Puslinch Township on 15 Feb 1850.5  This is in the same vicinity that several persons named John or Hugh Cockburn6 are also located, southeast of Farnham, as shown on an 1861 map.  The Annals of Puslinch 1850-1859 states that Patrick Linch was an early settler in the area known as School Section No. 10, but that the area was very hard to farm. After the forest had been cleared away, many settlers were forced to move elsewhere in order to support their families.7

Census and church records provide additional information about Patrick and Ellen's family. All of the children were born in Canada West and their approximate years of birth can be calculated from age next birthday, as given in the 18518 and 18619 census records (see Appendix A). Additionally, a baptismal record exists for one child. The family members were Patrick, a farmer and widower born in Ireland abt 1814; Ellen born in Ireland abt 1817 (deceased during the 1851 census year); Elizabeth born abt 14 Jan* 1837; Thomas born abt 4 Nov* 1838; Catherine born abt 17 Jan10 1842; Bridget born abt 1844; Ellen born 8 Aug 1847; 11 and Patrick born abt 1851. They lived in a log house in Puslinch Twp. at the time of the census.  Tragically, Patrick's wife Ellen died on 9 Nov 1851 12 of dropsy (edema) 13 , a swelling of the joints and body cavities due to accumulation of fluid in the tissues. This loss left Patrick to care for six motherless young children, including a baby, who it seems might have died at a young age.

Patrick and Ellen's oldest daughter, Elizabeth, married Matthew Brady (1834-1891)* on 1 Apr 1872 at Guelph, Wellington Co.* Elizabeth died on 6 Sep 1916 and was buried at Mount Forest. The Brady children were:

They lived in Arthur Township and later in the village of Mount Forest. The family gravestone is located in the Holy Cross R.C. Cemetery at Mount Forest.

The Lynch's oldest son, Thomas, was born 4 Nov 183814 and married Lucinda Warner. He died 20 Dec 1920 at Washington, Sanilac County, Michigan, USA, and was buried at Zion Cemetery, Sandusky, Watertown Twp., Sanilac Co., MI. 15 Their marriage was recorded in the Wellington County Marriage Register (1858-1869) on 26 Nov 1862, with Thomas listed as age 22 of Eramosa, born Puslinch, son of Patrick/Ellen.  Lucinda (Worner) was recorded as age 25 of Eramosa, born Crowland, dau of James/Sarah Ann. They were married by Rev. Eli Bartram of Eramosa, Methodist Episcopal Minister. 16  Lucinda was born in Crowland Twp., Welland Co., Ont. on 12 Jun 1837, 17 died at Washington, Sanilac Co. on 26 June 1923, and was buried at Zion Cemetery, Sandusky, MI.  Her mother's maiden name was Sarah Ann (Snively) Sonalvely. 18  At the time of the 1871 census, Thomas and Lucinda lived northwest of Ventry, on Lot 28 Concession 13 of Proton Township, Grey County, with the family listed as being Wesleyan Methodist and Scotch.19   ( See Appendix B)

The agricultural census showed that Thomas Lynch owned 100 acres of land with 50 acres improved- 6 acres pasture, 5 acres wheat, 5 acres hay and 1½ acres potatoes with production of 25 bu. spring wheat, 25 bu. fall wheat, 150 bu. barley, 600 bu. oats, 60 bu. peas, 200 bu. potatoes, 400 bu. turnips and 6 tons hay.  The farm had 1 house, 2 barns/stables, 1 car/waggon/sled, 1 plough/cultivator and 1 fanning mill.  There were 2 working oxen, 3 milch cows, 3 other horned cattle, 8 sheep, 2 swine, 1 cattle and 5 sheep killed for export, 200 lb. butter, 36 lb. wool, 40 yds. homemade cloth. 20  They moved to the Capac, MI area in 1873 and resided on the S.W. corner of Section 24 of Watertown Twp., Sanilac Co.
Children of Thomas and Lucinda were:21

Patrick and Ellen's daughter, Catherine, married Alexander Stephen (1810-1876), a widower, on 12 Oct 1861.  The Grey County Marriage Register (1858-1869) contains details about the couple.  He was Alexander Stephen, age 39 of Proton, born Scotland, son of George Stephen/Margaret Jeffrey.  She was Catherine Lynch age (blank) of Guelph, born Canada West, dau of Patrick Lynch/Helen Graham.  Rev. John Hay, Presbyterian Church of Canada, was the minister.22

The Stephen family lived on Lot 19 Concession 4 of Proton Twp., Grey Co., which Alexander had purchased in 1857, at one of the first land sales of the township.23  In the surrounding neighborhood, St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church had been constructed of logs by 1861, nearby on Lot 21 Conc 3.  It was also used as a school.  Known as Separate School #6, it was the only school in the area for many years.  In 1881 the original building that housed the church and the separate school was replaced by a new church on Lot 24 Conc 3 and a frame building for a school on Lot 22 Conc 4. 24

Farming was often difficult for early pioneers in Proton Township. Unfortunately, Stephen’s land was low-lying and may have tended to be swampy, seldom producing a good crop.25  The 1860s brought crop failure and losses of livestock.  A number of his cattle and a horse died.  The year 1864 was known as the "Starvation Year" because the entire wheat crop was frozen, and settlers had to buy bread, corn and meal.26   Few deer or birds were seen in the area, since their food supply was so scarce.  Alexander Stephen lost his entire harvest of twelve acres of wheat to frost in 1868.27

The family was listed in the 1871 census of Proton Township (See Appendix C).  The 1871 agricultural census showed that Stephen owned 1 dwelling on 100 acres with 55 acres improved- 10 acres pasture, ½ acre wheat, 1 acres potatoes, 13 acres hay.  Production was 2 bu. spring wheat, 100 bu. oats, 100 bu. potatoes, and 12 tons hay.  Also recorded were 2 barns/stables, 2 cars/waggons/sleds, 2 ploughs/cultivators and 1 fanning mill with 1 horse over 3 years old, 3 milch cows, 6 other horned cattle, 5 sheep, 3 swine, 2 cattle killed for export, 3 swine killed for export, 200 lb. butter, 13 lb. wool, 39 yds. homemade cloth and 20 cords firewood. 28

The job of improving the land took a toll on the settlers. By 1873, Stephen had managed to chop down much of the heavy forest that covered his land through hard manual labour, although twenty-five acres of timber were saved for firewood and fencing.  The stumps and roots were almost rotted away by this time, and the whole place was now lying under grass.  At the age of sixty-three, he was worn out from the cruel physical demands of clearing the land and was too exhausted to plant more crops. 29   He died at Mount Forest, Wellington Co. in 1876, at sixty-five years of age.30

Alexander and Catherine had the following children:

After the death of her first husband in 1876, Catherine married John 41 Buckley,42 who was born in Ireland.43   He also predeceased Catherine.44  They had two daughters:

ALEXANDER STEPHEN (1866-1937) MARGARET AND CATHERINE BUCKLEY (L to R)

Catherine (Lynch Stephen) Buckley died on 24 Jul 1904 in Toronto, Ont.  The registration of her death gives her age as 62 years, residence 34 Hayter, occupation confectioner, and cause of death cerebro spinal meningitis. 49  She was buried at St. Patrick’s R.C. Cemetery in Proton Twp. 50 According to her will, Alexander Stephen received the west half of Lot 19 Conc 4 and Arthur Stephen received the east half of the lot, subject to payments to their sisters.51

Patrick and Ellen's daughter, Bridget, married Dennis O'Keefe on 1 Sept 1870 at Guelph, Ont. He was born in Ireland in about 1835 and died before 1881. Their children were:

After the death of her first husband, Bridget remarried to James Cannon (born about 1831 in Ireland), a widower, at Elora on 21 Oct 1884. He is likely the James Cannon who died on 29 Mar 1889 and whose death was registered at Fergus, Ont.  Bridget was living with her son, John O'Keefe, in Toronto in 1901 and died in that city on 1 Sep 1909. John and Bridget Cannon's daughter was

Patrick and Ellen's youngest daughter, Ellen, married Martin McMahon at Guelph on 3 Jun 1873. He was born in Ont in about 1851 and worked as a stone mason at Guelph. Their children were:

On 10 Apr 1853, Patrick Lynch remarried to Julia Ann (Johanna) Kennedy, a daughter of Thomas Kennedy and Julia Ryan of County Tipperary, Ireland.52  Johanna was born in Ireland in about 1821.53 She had children named Patrick and Julia Ryan, born in Ireland during a previous marriage to Bernard Ryan, 54 and there might have been other Ryan children as well.55 Patrick Ryan and his wife Margaret Brown settled in Syracuse, Onondaga Co., New York where he was a policeman for thirty years. 56 He died 6 Dec 1932 in Syracuse, NY, and was buried at St. Agnes Cemetery, Syracuse, NY NY. 57According to the 1861 census of Ontario, Johanna's daughter, Julia, was born abt 1850. 58 She married Martin Hogan?, died 5 Mar 1903 in Ithaca, NY, and was buried at St. Anthony's Cemetery, Groton, NY. 59

The register of of Church of Our Lady in Guelph records the baptism of Patrick and Johanna Lynch's four children.60  They were Patrick born 30 July 1854 Puslinch Twp., died 8 Jun 1894 Cortland, NY,61 buried St. Anthony's Cemetery, Groton; Mary Ann born 29 Aug 1855 Puslinch Twp., married James Dalton 15 Apr 1877 St. Lucy's R.C. Church, Syracuse, NY, died 2 Aug 1934 Auburn, Cayuga Co., NY, buried St. Joseph's Cemetery, Auburn; Jane born 21 Aug 1858 Puslinch Twp., died 13 Jan 1893 Groton, NY,62 buried St. Anthony's Cemetery, Groton, NY; Martin born 2 Mar 1860 Puslinch Twp.

Church records from Guelph show that Patrick Lynch Sr. died on 7 Jan 1864 and was buried on 9 Jan.63 His wife Johanna died in May 1870. 64

Patrick, Mary Ann, and Jane were involved in a land sale in 1887 regarding fifty acres of the half lot that had been owned by their father in Puslinch Twp.65  Related documents indicate that at this time Patrick was a miner at Clifton, Arizona, where copper was mined, while Mary Ann and her husband lived at Groton, NY, and Jane, a spinster, lived in the city of Syracuse, NY.

Mary Ann Lynch moved to Syracuse, NY in 1873.66 Later, she and her husband James Dalton (Apr 1851-15 Apr 1915)67  had a family of eleven children at Groton, NY.68 They were:

The Lynch family arrived in Canada relatively early, considering that the mass exodus of emigrants from Ireland did not occur until the time of the Great Famine that began in 1845.  The political instability in Ireland and famines of the 1820s with continuing social and economic problems of the 1830s may have prompted them to seek a better future for themselves and for their descendants in Canada.  Although the first Lynches in Canada evidently suffered considerable hardship while pioneering in early Ontario, many of their progeny have found opportunities in diverse fields in many different geographic locations of North America.
