Responding to Literature by Mrs. Catherine Suen’s Class (Sherwood School) |
By Sonya Grade 4 February 23, 2004 The title of this story is Sierra’s Triathlon. The main character is of this story is Sierra. It happened when they were in the house. The setting was in the house. In the beginning of the story Sierra doesn’t know what to do with his brother and his friends. Because her mom was late. So she did a Triathlon. In the middle of the story Sierra did a duck game where without tripping on your feather you have to walk on your hand and feet. The she made up a game where you get five pair of socks and you threw them it was called stink dodge. Sierra could not find a prize .In the end Sierra mom brought home pizza and the boy said nice prize Sierra This book reminds me of when my cousins baby sit because they do really fun staff. The author tries to say that you could have fund baby sitting. Something new I learned from this story is it could be fun being baby sat. the most important part of the story is when Sierra kept the boys busy. I hope Sierra had fund baby sitting. I think the boy had fun. I now understand how tough it is to baby sit because it is hard for Sierra to baby sit. I don’t believe the boy were allowed to throw socks in the house. Something I could change in this story would be instead of changing the furniture we could play on the rage. The thing I like best about the story is when they played stink Dodge. I really like the part when they played stink Dodge. Grade 4 Dec 15, 2003 (This response was done by the whole class) I am responding to the book entitled “supposing” The authors of this book are Frances Thomas and Ross Collins. This is what the author was trying to say in the beginning of the story. Little monster is telling his mom that he was supposing that there was a big hole in the middle of his room the next day. In the middle of the story, the author is trying to tell us that the little monster is really scared. It doesn’t want to be left alone. The little monster showed us he is scared because he told us about the story. He was supposing that the hole got bigger and bigger and a gigantic spider was chasing after him. His mom was telling good thoughts to little monster. His mom is trying to help him get rid of his nightmares. She told a good story. She talked about balloons and ice cream. At the end of the story the little monster mom told little monster that everything would be alright. Little monster is not scared any more because he thought of having a purple balloon by his side. This book reminds me of a hot –air balloon. The author tried to make this book scary. The setting of this story is in bed. I hope he feels better. If I could change something it would be the scary parts. I think little monster is nice. I wonder what happened after little monster went to bed. By Steven Grade 4 January 12, 2004 I am responding to Wolf in Court. The main character is the wolf (Mr. Mean) I do know the time in court (2:00 pm). The setting is in Sherwood forest. The wolf got shot and goes to court. The wolf feels pain. The wolf get sentenced 200 hours of community service. The wolf feels sad. One book this reminds me of is Little Red Riding Hood. I am connecting these two stories, Little Red Riding Hood, little red riding hood is telling the story. In little red Riding Hood story, the wolf was eating grandma, but in the story Wolf in Court, the wolf thought little Red was a fox and he thought he was eating fox. The author is trying to give the wolf a chance to tell his side of the story. The wolf claiming that he thought Red was a fox. The wolf said wolves are all supposed to eat foxes for supper. The settings of the story were the forest and court. The court setting is important because that’s where the wolf showed how smart he was. He tried to get out from being punished in court but could not. So he made sure the person who hurt him Robin Hood got sentenced. That was a great story of wolf in court. I really enjoyed the way the author tries to tell the wolf side of the story. By Tyra Grade 3 September, 2003 Innovation: Peas Spread as Good as Peanut Butter by Don Thomas (newspaper article from the Journal) This story is about a man and a girl that makes peanut butter that is made out of peas and they make the peanut butter with peanuts and butter. The best part of the story is making peanut butter and then the people make designs on the peanut butter and it looks cool. I feel happy because the peanut butter is so good that I can eat it on my sandwich with jam it is good I eat all the time I love peanut butter it is yummy and it tastes good. This story is about a girl and a boy that makes peanut butter but it is so good and the girl makes the designs on the peanut butter lots of designs like a happy face and all that kind of designs like a hand print or a spaghetti print for the hair to the happy face. By Tyra Grade 3 February, 2004 The Ugly Duckling by Hans Christian Andersen The main character is Hans Christian Andersen because that’s how he made the story of the Ugly Duckling. The date was in the summer and in winter and also fall. The setting was in the summer when the ugly duckling was born and also in the Spring when the ugly duckling thought he was ugly. In the beginning the ugly duckling was not born, but the next day the duckling was born and thought he was very ugly. The character tries to tell us that the ugly duckling is ugly but the ugly duckling turns into a geese and now he looks really beautiful. I feel in this story is that when the ugly duckling turned into a geese and when he turn so beautiful. Relate Is that when my sister ears went in the back of her hear and that she looked ugly but now she looks good. The author tells us that the way duckling is very ugly and also the duckling is really a bird. The setting of the story is when the ugly duckling was very ugly in the beginning of the story. I do not believe that the duckling is a ugly duckling. I wonder why they tease the ugly duckling. May be it’s because the ugly duckling is ugly but not to me. I would make it as the duckling to look beautiful when the duckling is first born. The thing I like best about this story is that when the ugly duckling was turned into a swan and was beautiful as the sky. By Roman Grade 4 January 12, 2004 Wolf in Court by Vivek, written a grade six student in Magpie magazine I am responding to Wolf in Court. The main character is the wolf. It happened in daytime in fall or spring. This took place in the woods. What happens is the wolf thought Red was a fox, so wolf ate Ms Sourwater. Wolf is feeling suspicious. Next what happed Red Riding Hood went to the house and got gobbled up too. Suddenly Robin Hood heard Wolf’s big belch. So he shot the wolf. The wolf felt in pain and was sad. So wolf was in the hospital. Wolf got summoned to a trial where the court was. Wolf was found guilty but wolf said that Robin Hood shot him in a free hunting zone. So they both had to work community services. Wolf did 200 hours. And Robin Hood did 250 hours. One book this story reminds me of is Little Red Riding Hood. I am comparing these two stories. In Little Red Riding Hood little Red Riding Hood is telling the story. In the Wolf in Court story, the wolf is telling the story. In Little Red Riding Hood story, the wolf was eating the grandmother. But, in the Wolf in Court story, the wolf thought Little Red was a fox and he though he was eating a fox. The author is trying to give the wolf a chance to tell his side of the story. The wolf claimed that he thought Red was a fox. The wolf said wolves are supposed to eat foxes up for supper. By Navaneet Grade 4 February 222, 2004 I am writing about the story Sierra’s Triathlon written by Sue Mozena. The main character is Sierra. The time was in the summer. The setting was in the house. The characters felt happy because the characters has to be happy. In the beginning of the book sleepover. One book this story reminds me of is the tortoise and the hare because I like that book. One thing this story reminds me of is when it was track and field day when we had to compete in all of the stations. The author is trying to say that even though you have track and field day you can have it at home. The setting in the story is in th house. The most important thing is you can have fun any time. Something new I learned is you can have track and field day anytime. I think this story is going to be better next time because it is good. I hope this story is going to be better next time. I now understand that you can have track and field any time. I do not believe that you can have fun any time. I wonder if the story is going to be better. The moral is when something that you learned new. By Tracy Grade 3 November 24, 2003 I heard in the article that they were talking about a school bus that lost two wheels from the bus! The name and author of the story is Edmonton Journal and R.D. Aliesio. The main idea of the story is that the back wheels fell right off. The main character is the kids on the bus because they got hurt. One book this story reminds me of is a book called the school bus and it told me about a bus that went crazy cause the two back wheels also came off. One thing this story reminds me of is the story was almost like the one in the article. The author is trying to say that you should never stand on a bus when the bus driver is driving. The setting of the story is the bus that lost two wheels at the back. Something new I learned from this story is that you could never stand up on a school bus when somebody’s driving it! The most important part of the story is that the two wheels fell off! I think the wheels just fell off because there’s no other way it could fall out! I hope nobody will stand up in the bus because it’s not safe. I now understand to never ever stand on the bus! I don’t believe that wheels could fall out because there’s no way. I wonder if it could really happen because I don’t know if it’s true. If I could change something in this story I would change it to have more details because it’s fun when you have lots of details in your story! By Paigepa Grade 3 The Mystery Ghost by Linda Davis Wood Tell three things that happened. Mom was Supotoranie the next wo days. Hake was scared. Roedy was happy because Rodey said in a monter voice when he said I hope there is thunder and lightening and weird signs. Tell which is the most important part and why The title because it tells you what the story is called and about. Tell how you feel about the story. I feel scared because it is scary. Tell what the story reminds you of. The story reminds me of ghosts. By Paigepa Grade 3 October 6, 2003 Way the Cookie Crumbles An article from the Edmonton Journal Sat Oct 4, 2003 Who: Qasim Saleerm Where: University in England Why: the story is about cookies (Picture of Cookies by Paige) By Lucia Grade 4 November 28, 2003 Title of Story: Big Mama and Grandma Ghana By : Angela Sheff Medaris Illustrated by: Lynne Russell The story is about a boy his name is Miles. He has two grandmas that do the same thing. The main idea of the story is that are alike. The main character are Miles and his two grandmothers. This reminds me of when my grandma came to visit me. I think Miles had fun because it sounds like it. I hoe that Miles had a great day because I would have a great day. I wonder how long grandma Ghana stayed. I now understand what grandma’s are like. I also understand that grandmas are important. I think my grandma is important. I hope my grandma comes to visit me again. By Angela Grade 3 January, 2004 I am writing about the story Life Savings by Janet and Alley Ahlberg. The main character is the old lady. The story happened when the old lady was 70 years old. The story took place at outside. At the beginning the old lady saved some days for her life savings. At the middle the old lady opened some boxes. At the end the old lady died and did not see one box left and her friends were cleaning up and then saw the last box that she did not see and opened it up and stored to be 4 year old children. The feelings of the people in the story were like children because the old lady and her friends opened some boxes. Things happed in the story by the lady playing in the playground and here friends playing in the stairs, phone. The main characters felt happy because they got a chance to be children. The author tries to tell you can make some life savings. The setting of the story is when the old lady was 70 years old. The most important part I learned is you can save some life savings. I think the old lady wants to spend some time being a child because she does not want to spend them later. I hope I can save some money when I grow up when I am 20 years old. I do not believe that you can save parts of your life. I wonder how you can save parts of your life because you can’t stop your life from doing things. If I could change something in this story is would be in saving money. By Sam M Grade 4 February 23, 2004 I am responding to the story Sierra’s Triathlon the author is Sue Mozena. The main character is Sierra because she was the baby sitter for 4 kids. The time is a rainy day because if it wasn’t raining there would be no triathlon. The setting is mostly an arena because that’ where thy had the sports, In the arena (living room). In the beginning of the story Sierra sets up the arena for the kids and makes peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. In the middle they have some events like the duck walk, spider sprint. In the end she finds that she could always baby sit them and they got their prize-pizza. I think Sierra feels good about making them happy. It all happened because it was raining outside so they couldn’t play soccer. I think the feelings of the characters are very happy. One book this story reminds me of is Rafiki means Friend. I relate it to this story because Rafiki does a race just like Sierra sets up a triathlon for the kids. One thing this I can relate to is that I like having things like that at my house too. Just like Sierra has a triathlon. The author is trying to say that you should always use your imagination. Just like Sierra uses hers. One thing I learned from this story is always use your imagination because you might think of something really fun. The most important part of the story is when Sierra finds that she can baby sit any time because she know what to do. I think that it was probably very fun to do a triathlon because they sound very fun. I hope that I can have a triathlon because my brothers would probably like it. I now understand that she had an arena, for fun game because it was raining. I do not believe that she had no prize but then when her mom came home with pizza they thought it was the prize. I wonder what hey will do next time in he triathlon because it might be raining. If I could change something in the story it would be that the mom brought home ice cream instead of pizza because it might be hot. I wonder why they didn’t do anything like cleaning up when the mom came home or why not wolves instead of ducks? Why did the have a stink dodge because they might have broken something and gotten in lots of trouble. Grade 4 January 19, 2004 (This response to literature was done with the help of the whole class) Today we went to a play and here are some things that happened at the Sweet Dreams Fairy Tale Play. I am responding to the play Sweet Dreams. It is a fairy tale written by grade 10 students in Ross Sheppard High School. Miriam, the princess, is the main character in the play. The story took place at night time when Miriam went to bed. The setting was in a dream. Miriam’s dream took place in a castle. In the beginning of the dream there were a king, a queen and a kind and gentle princess. In the middle of the play the bad witch gave the princess a poisonous apple. Then the princess fell into a deep sleep. The princess had a dream while she was sleeping. In this dream the princess could not find her castle. She met a prince and a fairy. They met a wizard in the forest. In the end the play the good witch helped the princess return to the castle, but the bad witch tried to steal her beauty. At this moment in the dream, Miriam woke up from her night mare. The princess felt bad because she couldn’t find her castle. This happened because she ate the poisonous apple in Miriam’s dream. Miriam felt frightened because she had a bad nightmare. One fairy tale this reminds me of is Sleeping Beauty because Sleeping Beauty also sleeps and could not be woken up. Both of the main character in these two fairy tales are sleeping and are beautiful. I can also compare this story to Snow White. Snow White also eats a poisonous apple like the princess in this play. The difference is Snow White could be woken up by a kiss from a prince but the princess in this play could not be waken up by even 3 kisses. The playwrights tried to say never take anything from a stranger like the princess tried to take an apple from the bad witch. The playwrights also trying to say dreams could be nightmares even if you are dreaming about fairy tales. They are also saying if you mix up all the fairy tales like Snow White, Sleeping Beauty Wizard of Oz and Alice in Wonder Land ,you could make it into perfect play for elementary school kids to watch. By Shanissa Grade 4 Reflect Wolf in Court written by a grade six student in Magpie magazine The author is trying to give the wolf a chance to tell his side of the story. The wolf claimed that he thought Red was a fox the wolf said wolves are supposed to eat foxes. The settings of the story were the forest and the court . The court setting was important because that’s where the wolf showed how smart he was. He tried to get out from being punished in court but the person who hurt him Robin Hood got sentences. That was a great story of wolf in court. I really enjoyed the way the author tries to tell the wolf side of the story. By Anthony Grade 3 November 12, 2003 The name of the story is Around the World Nonstop by Balloon story by Chris Bonington. Main idea is going around the world in a hot air balloon nonstop by two men. The main characters are Per Branson. I can compare this story by when it is my birthday because I see a lot of hot air balloons. I like the part when they start the race. Because you get their names and how the race starts. I wonder what happens after Per jumps into the water without a life jacket and Branson does not. By Ashley Grade 3 November 6, 2003 If you Could Wear my Sneakers Author: Sheree Fitch Reflect-the author The author is trying to say that if you wear my shoes can I try yours on so they would fit we would still get to know what your like and you get to know what I’m like and maybe we can be friends. The author has lots of ides she made up funny stuff in the booth she made up rhyming. She made up jokes in the story I think the author is very nice for making this poem I think that’s very nice. By Ronnie Grade 3 February 9 Name of Story: Ali Baba and the forty thieves Retold by Margaret Early I wonder why did Ali Baba told his brother Cassim where the gold was. Anyways when Cassim brought 10 donkeys to the place he got off one of the donkeys. Then he said the word: Open Sesame When he got the 10 bags full he forgot the word. Later on the forty thieves came when the thief saw him hot cut up 16 pieces. When Ali Baba saw this he went down he got him then he came back up with Cassim Then he found Cassim out and he wanted to kill Ali Baba Nut his wife saw the knife and took it out and killed him. By Chris Grade 5 Feb 19, 2004 This story is the Ugly Duckling by Hans Christian Andersen The main character is the Ugly Duckling. The time in the story is morning. The setting of the story is the four seasons of summer, fall, spring, winter. What happen in the beginning of the story is the Ugly Duckling ran away. In the middle of the story the Ugly Duckling got stuck in ice. In the end of the story he saw he was a swan. The Ugly Duckling felt ugly. The way this happen is he ran away. One book this story reminds me of is Cinderella because she thought she was ugly. One thing this story reminds me of is when my cat ran away and we found him in a tree. The author tries to say don’t read a book by its cover. The most important part of the story is when he found out he was a swan. I think he was caught. I hope he finds mom. I now understand that no one can be judged by its cover. I don’t believe that the man pick up the duck. I wonder why the man pick up the duck. If I could change something, it would be he found his mom. The moral of the story is you can’t judge a book by its cover. By Kyle Grade 4 October 14, 2003 Author: Debra Frasier Title of Story: Miss Alaineus Illustrator: Debra Frasier The story was exciting when the girl went up at the class and spelled Miss Alaineus right but describe Miss Alaineus wrong then everyone laughed at her. It was funny because 1. she said Miss Alaineus had spaghetti hair then said she was on a cover of a spaghetti box and it made her embarrassed in front of the class. I learned in the story that you should never cheat or you will get caught somehow maybe from your mom or dad or teacher but somehow you will get caught no matter what and that is the truth. By Rajneel Grade 3 October 20 Title: The selfish Giant Author: Oscar Wilde Retold by: Fiona Waters The setting of the story “The selfish giant” The setting of this story is important because when each time kids go to the giant’s garden. The garden turns into spring but when the giant chases the kids away the garden trees has snow on them and the birds stop singing so then the giant gets lonely. When a child needs help getting on a tree all of the trees got snow on them and the birds fly away and the little kid got help to get up by the giant. Then the giant realized he was wrong and selfish so he let all kids play after school. The giant asks the kids if they have seen the little kid. But the answer was always “no”. Years past until the giant saw the kid he helped so he checked it out. He was right it was him the giant saw bruises on the kid. So he said he slay the person who made nail marks on the kid. But the kid said it is marks of love. Later the giant lie dead covered with blossoms on him. All the kids watched sadly. By: Steven Grade 4 February 23 I am responding to the story Sierra’s Triathlon by Sue Mozena. The main character is Sierra because she tells the story and she is in every picture. The setting is inside Sierra it is not any where else. I think this story is happening in spring because of rain and on Saturday because of the sleepover. In the beginning Sierra Makes a game and the boy play the game about ducks. In the middle Sierra makes them do spider sprints. In the end Sierra makes them a sock fight. They feel happy because they have fun. I can relate by when I wanted to go home then Christopher entertained just like Sierra did. The author tries to say that you can entertain no matter what. The setting is important because without it they could not stay dry inside the setting and they couldn’t do the Triathlon and there would be no story I learned what triathlon means. There are three important party. When they did the duck game, spider sprints, stink dodge. I hope they had a lot of fun. I want them to do the crazy caterpillar crawl. I wonder what day it is. I like the triathlon the best. By Sams Grade 4 October 28, 2003 Name of story: Ali Baba and the forty Thieves Retold by Margaret Early I wonder why the captain of the thieves and why didn’t he kill himself before all of his men died except for when he killed two of his men and then all the thirty-seven thieves died by Morgiana. The most important part of the story is when Morigianna saves all of the people that was in the house from the thirty seven thieves and the chief. By Alex Grade 3 October 20, 2003 Title: The selfish Giant Author: Oscar Wilde Retold by: Fiona Waters The setting of the story was the garden. The setting of this story is important because if there were no garden there would be no story of the selfish giant. The children were playing in the garden then a giant came and chased them. The selfish giant put a huge brick wall that they could not play in the garden. It turn to winter the selfish giant said I hope spring comes it did not come. Next morning was spring. He thought it was the king’s magician. He went outside and he saw kids playing he said what a selfish giant I am he said I was wrong .When he was in the garden the kids ran and one boy did not run. By Jolene Grade 4 February 18, 2004 The name of the book is the Ugly Duckling by Hans Christian Andersen Retold by Jer ry Pinkney. The main character is the ugly duckling because he is mentioned most in the story The date is in Summer Winter, fall spring we know it because we saw snow, we say leaves falling. We saw buds blooming and we saw the beautiful flowers after they bloomed. There are two settings outside and in the cottage. The story reminds me of when I first moved to Sherwood School every one made fun of me because I was new. The author tries to say that you may get teased by kinds but they’re just jealous of you. If there were no wild it not be a wild duck because ducks that were born in the wild are wild ducks I learned that animals have feelings too. The most important thing about the story the duckling did not fight back. I think the duckling is going to be happy when he finds his mom I hope that the other ducklings feel sorry for what they did I now understand that making fun of ids can hurt because everyone has feelings I do not believe that the duckling did not fight back because they really made him feel bad I wonder if the ugly duckling finds his mommy I would change that the ugly duckling was teased. The thing I like best is that the man helped ducking By Shawn Grade 3 January 26, 2004 I am responding to the story Life Savings by Janet and Alley Ahlberg The main character is a lady. It was spring or summer time. The setting was outside. In the beginning of the book the lady was acting like kids and she had lots of fun. Then the lady died and there was one box left and her friends opened it and they started acting like four years olds. The lady was happy because she got to do all the stuff when she was a kid. One book this story reminds me of is when you are 70 years old because when she opens a box she turns into nine or ten years old. One thing this sory reminds me of is when my dad plays with me because he acts like a four year old. The author is trying to say that old ladies could hav fun too. Somehting new I learned from his story is that everybody could have fun too. I think my gramma could have fun too because sometimes she acts like a four year old. I hope my gramma doen not turn into a four year old because who is going to make food for me. I now understand that everybody could play even when they are 70 years old. By Paigepro Grade 5 February 18, 2004 I am responding to the book called The Ugly Duckling. The author of this book is Hans Christain Andersen. Retold by Jerry Pinkney. The ugly duckling is the main character of this book. It was in summer. The setting of this story is in a forest. In the beginning of the story the Ugly Duckling was called names and being pushed around. And the mother duck pushed around. And the mother duck was guarding him/her cause even though he/she is ugly she still loves him/her. The duck was feeling sad because he/her had ran away. It had happened in summer. He feels happy in his heart. One book this story reminds me of is the littlest duck. One thing this story reminds me of is a little duck in a bath tub. The author tries to say that the ugly duckling must have rolled in the wrong nest. The setting of he story is when he was outside he saw a shelter. Something new I learned from the story is when he found a shelter and got stuck in the ice. The most important part of the story is when he grew up as a swan and lived happily ever after. I think that the egg fell in by accident. I hope he found his home. I now understand that he was in the wrong nest. I did not believe that he stuck in the ice. I wonder where he went at the end of the story. If I could change something in this story it would be not getting stuck in the ice. I would have stayed out of the water. If I were the duck I would not leave run away because I would get lost. The moral of the story is…If I were a duck I would never run away. |
