Comments from Mrs. Laura Renneberg |
| 1. How the project went (from your perspective). - students learned more about many aspects of writing: writing for an audience, evaluating their own writing and that of others, revising their own writing and that of others, etc. - timeline was a bit tight, especially right before and after Christmas, but it is nice to have it completed - took a great deal of time and it was difficult to schedule sufficient computer time When I weigh the pluses and minuses, the positives win by a long shot. Motivation was high for the students, both for having their writing appear on the web and for the message board component (being able to suggest improvement to the writing of peers and receiving feedback on their own writing). Since they were motivated, the students worked hard to do well, trying to improve their writing. Even initially, just knowing that the writing was going to be posted on the net motivated the children to produce their best work. They stretched themselves to make the extra effort to do well. The effort they made for the initial writing has carried over into other writing tasks because they were so pleased with the results. Receiving feedback from peers, rather than the teacher, seemed to make the comments more valuable in the children’s eyes. I think that this project was an excellent idea, positively impacting the writing of my students in many ways, not necessarily all of which are measurable. This was an excellent project, providing my students with motivation and an audience for their writing. Their attitudes toward writing have improved and, because of the high level of motivation, they have gained skills that probably would have taken them longer to develop otherwise. I am pleased to have been able to take part in the project and with the impact the involvement has made on my students’ writing skills. 2. The impact of this project on your student's learning, include comments on the impact of using the Internet and Information and communications Technologies. i.e.) what the students learned about computer technology - learned more about composing and editing text on the computer - learned to cut and paste text - learned to work with multiple windows - learned more word processing skills - learned to use the message board - became more confident - learned to access the internet 3. Describe what curriculum outcomes/expectations were achieved and/or not achieved and why. (i.e.) what the students learned about using the web through Tools For Learning - access and retrieve information from electronic sources - seek alternate viewpoints - assess information and make a judgment regarding how to edit writing - using technology to aid collaboration - use electronic research techniques to construct knowledge - demonstrate understanding of nature of technology - identify techniques t& tools for communicating, storing, retrieving and selecting information - practice proper posture at the computer - demonstrate a basic understanding of the operating skills required for a computer and moving between screens - composing, revising & editing text - integrate applications - use communication technology to interact with others - motivated students to develop better keyboarding skills 4. What the students learned about writing... - project helped motivate them to improve their writing - learned to compose & edit online - learned & experienced providing feedback for the writing of other students - learned more about editing their work - worked hard to include more descriptive language and to be more specific in their writing - worked to replace non specific pronouns (i.e. it) with more specific words - worked hard to incorporate imagery in their writing - involvement resulted in the children’s attitudinal improvements towards writing 5. In what ways did students work together both during the project and in creating the website? - assisting each other in initial feedback of writing prior to posting the project on the net - assisting each other if there was a computer-related problem that student one could solve for another during the word processing - assisting each other with the message board (reading, posting procedure, cut and paste, etc.) - interacted with other student through the message board, giving & receiving feedback on the writing - the entire project taught students to help others improve their writing 6. Your contribution to the project. - attended inservicing on the project - established writing assignments for the project - supported children as they began the initial writing - taught keyboarding and other necessary computer skills - altered timetable to provide more writing & computer time - taught students to post their writing online using the message board - taught students how to respond to the messages of others - taught children how to assess their own writing and that of other students in the project - taught students to create web pages - created web pages submitting student writing - responded to final issues in project |
