Frequently Asked Questions
Here you can find answers to common questions
about Player Connector. If your answer is not on this page, we
will be happy to help you on Player Connector itself.
Why can't I
login with my account anymore?
There are people that occasionally create
a new account, because they don't know how to rename their existing
one or just like to pretend to be someone else. There are also
people that stopped playing doom and never come back, and thus
never use their account again. Accounts are removed if they have
not been used for 30 days. This keeps the services clean and
ensures it holds only the accounts of people that really come
back to play doom online. The names of the removed accounts are
"released", so if you lost your account you can just
click the Create Account button on the Login dialog to make yours
again.
How do I change
my username and keep the same account?
You can keep your account and changes all
profile info, username and password in the Modify Account dialog.
You can get there by selecting Modify Account from the Connector
menu.
Why does my
firewall alert me when using Player Connector?
Player Connector uses the ICMP protocol
to measure pings between you and everyone else that you see in
the list at the left. The ping is important for the gameplay
(lower ping is better). Every few seconds Player Connector quickly
sends an ICMP ping to all the people on the users list and measures
the time it takes for the other computer to respond. Your computer
is receiving pings from other people as well. This is what your
firewall is reporting to you. ICMP signals are completely harmless,
so there is no security risk in allowing your computer to respond
to these ICMP signals. If you choose to block the signals, other
people on Player Connector will not see what ping they have to
you.
Read your firewall's manual for information
on how to configure your firewall correctly.
What ports do
I have to open on my firewall to play online?
Player Connector uses TCP port 5232 for
File Transfers and TCP port 532 to connect to its server. To
play games online, you must open the ports that the games use.
Here is a list of several engines and the ports they use:
ZDoom: UDP port 5029
Doom Legacy: UDP port 5029
What do the
red messages in the chat mean?
When a game in a room is set up by its
moderator, the required files are being verified on your computer.
You must have the required files and you must have the same files.
These warning messages will then tell you if you are ready or
if you are missing something.
You do not have the engine support used
for this game
If you ever get this message, it means
that someone is using support which you don't have on your Player
Connector. If you think you should have it, first try closing
Player Connector and restarting it to see if you get the new
support with an update. Otherwise, the one who set up this game
is using custom support which has not been approved by the Player
Connector developers. Do not accept custom support (DLL files)
from sources you don't trust!
You are missing these files for this
game: ...
The files mentioned in this warning message
could not be found on your computer. You either don't have them,
or Player Connector couldn't find them. If you are sure you DO
have those files, go to Custom Files locations in the Support
menu and add the location(s) where your file(s) reside. If you
really do not have those files, check the Room Settings for a
URL to download them from, ask the moderator to send them to
you or type /getall to automatically download the required files
using GetWAD.
These files are invalid for this game:
...
Player Connector has found the required
files for the game, though, they appear to be different from
the moderator's files. You must have the same files to be able
to play, so check the Room Settings for a URL to download them
from, ask the moderator to send them to you or type /getall to
automatically download the required files using GetWAD. NOTE:
This warning may also appear when you have different files with
the same filename in any of your Custom Files locations.
This engine does not support in-game
joining
Pretty much self-explanatory. The game
you are trying to join cannot let players join afterwards. You
had to be marked Ready to Play or Moderate when the moderator
launched the game. Now you'll just have to wait for the players
to return from the game.
All files are OK for this game
This indicates that all files have been
verified and you are ready to play this game. Have fun :D
What commands
can I use in Player Connector?
Type a single / for a short summary of chat commands. Below are
all commands explained in details.
/afk message
AFK (Away From Keyboard) is generally automatically activated
when you're not using Player Connector for a few minutes or when
you minimize it. To manually set your AFK status, type /afk where
message is any message you would like show in the Tool tip on
your name. You AFK status will be removed when you chat, move
or type /unafk.
Example: /afk on the phone
/alias command message
This will 'bind' a custom command to any message or existing
command. You must specify a name in command and anything to bind
to it inmessage. If you don't specify message, the command will
be unbound. If you dont specify anything at all, a complete list
of all aliasses will be shown.
You can use parameters in message where %0 is the complete text
that was typed after the command and %1 to %9 are replaced with
separate words that were typed after the command.
Example: /alias lookup /seen %0
This will make the command 'lookup' and makes it work exactly
as /seen
/ban username
Bans someone from the current room. The name specified in username
must be exactly the name as it exists (not case-sensitive). Banned
users are not able to get back into the room until the ban is
removed. If you do not specify username, a summary of all banned
users is shown. You must be moderator or have PRIV_KICK privilege
to use this command.
/banlist
Displays a summary of all banned users from the current room.
See help on /ban, /clearban and /unban for more details. You
must be moderator or have PRIV_KICK privilege to use this command.
/clear
Clears the entire chat box contents. Its that simple.
/clearban
Clears all bans from the current room. You must be moderator
or have moderator privileges to use this command.
/getall
This will use GetWAD to look at the Internet for files that you
are missing for the current game. These will be downloaded (and
unzipped if needed) to a location that you can configure in Custom
Files locations in the Support menu.
/getwad filename, filename, ...
This will download the specified files using GetWAD. These will
be downloaded (and unzipped if needed) to a location that you
can configure in Custom Files locations in the Support menu.
You can download multiple WAD files at once by seperating their
names with a comma. File extension is not required. This will
only works for supported Doom Ports.
/join roomkey password
Enters the room specified in roomkey. This is the same as double
clicking a room or selecting a room and clicking the Enter Room
button. Note that roomkey is NOT the Room Title, but a special
key to refer to the room. Rooms created by normal users always
get a random key assigned by the server. The main Lobby always
has the key "main". The password is not required, unless
the room is locked with a password.
/kick username
Kicks someone from the current room. The name specified in username
must be exactly the name as it exists (not case-sensitive). Kicked
users are able to come back into this room. You must be moderator
or have PRIV_KICK privilege to use this command.
Disconnects you from the server and shows the login dialog.
/me action
Shows action as if you're doing it.
Example: /me is going to setup the game
/msg username, message
This will whisper a message to the user specified in username.
Others in the room will not hear what you're saying, except only
that user of course. Note that you must separate your message
from the username with a comma, because usernames are allowed
to have spaces in them. This is the same as checking your "Whisper"
checkbox and selecting a user to chat to.
/part
Leaves the current room and returns to the Lobby in which the
room resides. This is the same as clicking the Leave Room button.
/seen username, username, ...
This will ask the server how long ago he last saw someone (specified
in username) online. If the user is currently online, it shows
for how long the user is online already and for how long he/she
is AFK (if at all). This powerful command also knows the last
few names the user was using and will also show these. If you
type a name which doesnt exist because the user renamed, it will
show information about the correct name, and show its old names
too. You can lookup more users at once by separating their names
with a comma.
/sound wavefile
Plays the requested sound specified in wave file for all people
at your current location, unless they disabled this feature in
their configuration. The wave file must be a standard WAVE file
(.wav extension) and must be location in the "Sounds"
subdirectory from your Player Connector directory.
Example: /sound wakeup
/unafk
Removes your AFK status that was previously set by /afk. Your
icon will become normal again so people know you're back and
active.
/unban username
Removes ban for the user specified in username from the current
room. The name specified in username must be exactly the name
as it exists (not case-sensitive). You must be moderator or have
PRIV_KICK privilege to use this command.
/verify
Verifies all required files for the current game. This only works
in Rooms, not in any Lobby. It will perform the same check that
is made as soon as the Game Setting are (re)configured by the
moderator. This is very useful if you moved files around or made
any changes to files and want to check if you're ready to play
the game. (Before you had to leave the room and re-enter to let
your get verified)
/whereis username, username, ...
Shows you where someone currently is and what he/she is doing.
You can lookup more users at once by separating their names with
a comma.
/whois username
This will show the profile of the user specified in username.
