C.F.P. Conybeare, K.C.

History

Davidson & Williams was established in 1885 by the late C.F.P. Conybeare, K.C. (Lethbridge’s first lawyer). Conybeare was active in the community and was instrumental in the establishment of the Board of Trade (now the Chamber of Commerce) and Southminster Church to name just a few. He was joined in 1913 by R.R. (Roy) Davidson, Q.C. who continued the firm after the death of Conybeare in 1926 and was joined in 1939 by his son W.P. (Bill) Davidson, Q.C..

The firm became known as Davidson & Davidson. They were joined in 1954 by R.W. (Dick) Williams, Q.C. and in 1968 by W.C. Richard Davidson, Q.C. In 1973 the firm adopted its present name. In 1974 the firm expanded further with the addition of H.R. (Herb) Beswick, Q.C.. The next few years saw the addition of R.A. (Rod) Jerke, Q.C. in 1979, D.G. (Derek) Redman, Q.C. in 1984 and R.R. (Roy) Davidson in 1985. E.E. (Ed) Rice, Q.C. who practiced law in Lethbridge for many years, joined the firm in 1991. Richard Davidson and his brother Roy are third generation members of the firm.

Effective July 1, 1990 the firm purchased the practice carried on in Pincher Creek by Turcott & Co., a firm whose roots predate the turn of the century in Pincher Creek.

The firm has five associates - Kelly Christie and Cindee Nyrose who been with Davidson & Williams for a few years, and more recently, Tammy Praskach and Kathleen Wells. In November, 2002, Mr. Justice L.D. Maclean joined the firm as counsel upon retiring from the Court of Queen's Bench of Alberta.

By 2002 Davidson & Williams had grown to 11 lawyers. This has enabled a number of the partners to practice in particular areas of the law and, as a result, our partners have acquired extensive experience particularly in the areas of personal injury litigation, labour and employment law, corporate law, estate planning and estate litigation, administrative boards and tribunals, family law and appellate practice.
