Wishing Wells
Before patios decks and patio furniture became popular, the main outdoor furniture was the old front porch rocker or discarded indoor furniture.
In days of old when all that there was to cook on was the wood stove, after three squares a day it frequently got to be uncomfortably warm inside the house.
Thus the front porch became an extension of the living room, or parlor as it was more commonly known. At first folks just brought out an old kitchen chair to lean back against the wall because until early 1900's chair backs were gernerally straight up and down and this was the most comfortable way of sitting in one of these - come to think of it I still find myself leaning on the back legs to find that perfetly neutral angle. But as time went on the furniture comfort on the porch improved and more types of outdoor furniture were used. In addition to the front porch rocker, wicker was a popular furniture for the front porch and was quite often left out all year round. Porch swings became almost as common as the large porches were and metal furniture began to move from the veranda of the wealthy to the front porches of the middle class.
