Gregory IV (827-844) a Roman is elected mostly by the nobility. His concentration by the Holy Roman Emperor Louis I the Pious (814-840) is delayed until 828 when he swore allegiance. This delay is likely to test the popular acceptance of the bishop of Rome.

United England is established which included England Saxon, Angles, Northumbria, Essex, Wessex, Sussex and Kent tribes. Holy Emperor Louis I the Pious (814-840) sons Lothair I (840-855), Pepin (d-838) and Louis the German (d-876) rebelled against their father. Gregory IV (827-844) bishop of Rome supported Lothair and accompanied him across the Alps to Frankland.
