New France with twelve ignorant and uneducated Abbes who were collected at the

Intendant Gilles Hocquart (1731-1748) wrote that the peasants of Quebec
are self-seeking, vindictive, subject to drunkenness and are not the most
truthful people. They are extremely sensitive to criticism and the
least punishment. They, however are not as gross and rustic as our
peasants of France. In contrast, Pehr (Peter) Kalm in 1749 considers the
peasant's politeness captivating. They are all well bred and virtuous,
with an innocent and becoming freedom.
