Jean Baptiste Louis Frederic de La Rochefoucauld de Roye, Duc d'Anville (1709-1746), married to Marie Louise Elisabeth de la Rochefoucauld (1716-1797), led a fleet of 54 ships and 6006 men to deal with the English.  Others suggest it was a fleet of 70 ships with 13,000 men.  The fleet was scattered by storms, fog and decimated by famine and disease.  After the death of d'Anville, Jacques Pierre de Taffanel de La Jonquiere (1685-1752) led the French fleet back to France.  Some 2,400 men died, none in action.  Not one shot was fired.  It is suggested he had little or no navel training or experience and this contributed to this disaster.  Others suggest the French merchants short changed the fleet of supplies and this contributed to the tragedy.

It is believed that (I)-Pierre Maillard b-1710, died August 12, 1762 Halifax of the Seminaire des missions etrangeres, arrived Nova Scotia with the d'Anville expedition having been captured by the British in 1745 and returned to France.

1748

(I)-Francois Bigot (1703-1778), at age forty-five, is the last Intendant of New France, serving from September 2, 1748 to September 8, 1760.  He had a long record of embezzlement.  He also presided over magnificent banquets and balls that scandalized the clergy in Canada, and his gambling bouts were notorious.  His fraudulent conduct brought him great personal wealth.  Eventually, a recall to France results in a fine of one and a half million livres, imprisonment in the Bastille and banishment forever.  He ended his days in relative poverty and disgrace in Switzerland.  Others said he had a greedy attention to personal profit and fled to Switzerland avoiding persecution in France and lived in splendor the balance of his life.

The Treaty of Aix La Chapelle restored Cape Breton and its Fortress, Louisbourg, to France.

Roland Michel Barrin de La Galissoniere, Marquis de La Galissoniere (1693-1756) Commandant General of New France, strongly advocated building a line of garrisoned posts down the Ohio Valley to hold the English colonies along the coast and limit their growth and expansion.

THE ACADIANS of Canada

The Acadians were a mixed blood people with a distinct culture unlike the French or English.  They were a high bred people more aligned to the Indian culture than the Europeans.  The Acadians were a collection of closely knit families.  Family, God, and land were important to them.  No one was rich, no one was poor.  They were non-materialistic.   No political parties were required.  Acadian life was calm, gentle and tolerant.  Crime was unheard of.  They had no social classes.  Acadians resisted political or moral rule.  The church had no more authority than minor religious administration.  The church had its cloak of invincibility removed and was vulnerable to personal criticism.  They were pacifists by nature.  Some called their culture a sort of utopia.   These attributes were a source of irritation to both Church and State.

A Mission is located on the St. Lawrence, opposite Prescott, at the mouth of the Oswegatchie River.  This Post is situated on the present site of Ogdensburg.

Pehr (Peter D. Kalm), a Swedish (Norwegian) gentleman, wrote that he saw no potatoes in any St. Lawrence Valley garden, neither white nor sweet.  The French said they did not like them and preferred wheat, peas and Indian corn.  It is noteworthy that they also produced carrots, turnips, radishes, cabbage, onions, lettuce, chicory, cucumbers, beets, pumpkins, watermelons, apples, gooseberries and red currents.  He believed the common Canadian more civilized and clever than in any other place he had visited.  He is amazed at their good breeding and courteous manner, both in word and deed.  Pehr Kalm wrote that there was scarcely a French Canadian who was not a clever marksmen and who did not own a rifle.  Kalm also noted: Whereas many nations imitate the French customs, I notice that, here, it is the French who, in various respects, imitate the customs of the Indians with whom they are in daily contact.  They smoke, in Indian pipes, tobacco prepared in the Native way; they wear shoes in Indian fashion, and garters and sashes like the Indians.

June 21:  The British established Halifax, Nova Scotia as a counterbalance to the French settlement, and Fort at Louisbourg.  They established the first Anglican church in Canada.  The construction of Saint Paul's Church will follow next year.  Governor Edward Cornwallis brought two thousand, five hundred and forty- four British immigrants (mostly discharged soldiers and sailors) to Nova Scotia.  A few Swiss are among the colonists and are considered better colonists than the British.  The British are not accustomed to discipline and subordination.  Edward Cornwallis had issued the first bounty on Micmac scalps after his gardener, a Mr. Brown, and his son are killed about 3 miles from town.  The Governor Charles Lawrence then raised the bounty from a few pounds to 30 pounds  after 7 men working on the other side of the harbor are killed.  The first settlers drew free building lots, but few houses were built before winter.  Some people stayed aboard ship, some died, and almost 1,000 departed for Boston and other American destinations.
