If you can't get rid of the family skeleton, you may as well make it dance -- George Bernard Shaw

too know who we are and where we came from"

CONVENTION USED

The Tanguay, Cyrrien convention with minor variations is used in this genealogy for the Garneau's being traced from the first in Canada to present times and I have attempted to directly incorporate the maternal lineage.  Those Garneau's that are being followed from present to historic times follow Tanguay, Cyrrien but some of the maternal lineage is contained separate until all connections are verified.  The ultimate objective is to have one consistent genealogy when the ascendancy is verified therefore it should be used as a working control copy.  Size may prohibit a complete inclusion of all maternal lineage in the Garneau data sets.

(II) Roman Numerals before an individuals name indicates a verified Canadian lineage which is positioned relative to the first generation Canadian.

(2) A number before an individual's name indicates a verified lineage to current Garneau roots but not linked to the first Canadian lineage.

SIMILAR NAMES

During research the following names can be confused with Garneau especially when reviewing poor quality records.  The first Known year of usage in Canada is provided.

GUERNAULT & GUERNAUX is listed by L'Abbe Cuprien  Tanguay as = Garneau but no one by that name is listed, also listed is Garnot, Garnaux, Garnault and Garnaud = Garneau

1656 - GUERINEAU is probably the same as Garnauld

1665 - GALARNEAU also Galarneud

1798 - GARCEAU

1670 - GAREAU also Garu, Garud, Garault, Garaut, Garo, Garreau, Garraud.

1659 - GARNEAU also Garnaud, Garnault, Garnaux, Garnot, Gurnoe, Guerault, Guernaux, Gurneau, Gourneau.
Gourneau commonly used in Red River/Pembina area about 1870 and is a family name from Val de Marne Vincennes, Seine, France from 1605 to 1773 but only recorded usage of this spelling in Canada before 1870 is E.J.P. Gourneau 1851 Melbourne, Quebec

Gurnoe first appeared in Sault Ste Marie in 1854 and appears to be the result of Joseph D. Gurnoe advisor and translator for Indian Affairs.

1762 - GAUDENEAU

1679 - GAUDREAU also Gaudro, Gaudrot, Gautereau, Gautreau,  Godreau, Gotereau, Gautrot, Godreau, Gottreau.

1710 - GAUTREAU also Gaudreau, Gotreau.

1668 - GAUVREAU also Govreau.

Don't expect to find a consistent understanding of French dit names as they can mean any of the following:

An Army surname
A place of origin
A land ownership
An ancestors first or last name
An original surname
Other misc. reasons.
