If Harry found the air force an attractive possibility, he also found a young woman named Mary quite appealing. In his letters home she is mentioned often. Thanks to the assistance of Marjorie Weber, a member of the Vulcan Historical Society, we now know Mary's last name was Spaeth. Marjorie put us in touch with a cousin of Mary, Ruth Dann who has provided the following information:

"Harry was in the same grade in school as I was and was a mischief maker sometimes. He and his friends were a happy group. One of his close friends, George Sales was also killed in the war. He was in the army.

Harry met Mary Spaeth in school and in church. They were very good friends and I think that if he had been able to come back from the war, they would have been together. Of course high school romances didn't always last into adulthood.

Mary was the adopted daughter of August and Hattie Spaeth who farmed three miles west of Vulcan. She was very talented musically. She took lessons from Mrs. Beulah Doney. She sang and played the piano at church, and later moved to Calgary, where she received her L.R.S.M. and A.R.C.T degrees in piano.

Mary was a first cousin of mine. Our mothers were sisters. Mary married in 1953 to Merrill Nicholson and had three sons. She passed away in Ottawa June 21, 1963 after a brief illness. I believe that two of her sons became ministers in the Church of Christ, and maybe all three did, I don't remember.

Back then there wasn't much to do after school or on weekends, except skating in the winter. Harry was a natural at figure skating , but he also played hockey."  - Ruth Dann
