Comments received from Geoff Wood, a
resident of Tholthorpe - December 2, 2004:
I have lived in Tholthorpe all my life
and was twelve years old when the war finished, so remember those years very
well. Jackson Clary (434 Sqn Pilot) and his wife Barbara lived with us at
Manor Farm, he was shot down on the Bochum raid but survived and returned
after 7 weeks down the "Escape Route" from Holland via Gibralter. We
celebrated their Golden wedding in Santa Rosa Ca. in 1993, sadly they are no
longer with us. The Memorial on our village green was erected in 1986 and each
year the villagers assemble on Remembrance Sunday to remember all those who
served at Tholthorpe. The photo' (14/11/2004) shows Ken Cothliff (Chairman 6th
Group Assoc'), myself, Flt.Lt. Phil Kemp (resident, QFI Linton on Ouse),
Flt.Lt. Mikey Sterritt (resident, QFI Leeming) and Capt. Greg Whyte (exchange
pilot Linton on Ouse).
There are 18 or 20 Tholthorpe airfield photo's
displayed in the bar of our pub "The New Inn" which are a constant
reminder of our debt to all those young men."
Greg Whyte is a member of the Canadian Forces.
Here is a photo' of him laying a "Canada" wreath which he provided
after hearing about our little ceremony.
