Our Dogs

This page is a series of photographs of dogs we now have and dogs we have known.  I am a real dog fan, always have been.  Domestic dogs are a really fascinating species and the result of selective breeding for at least 15,000 years.  They are by far our longest running genetic experiment.  We have produced breeds that vary greatly in appearance, behavior and temperament.  Some are used to protect, others to find as well as many other jobs.  And, of course, there are dogs that are companions and friends.

The Lab Sisters - Betty and Bobbie

Our present dogs are two Labrador Retrievers that we got in 2001.   The litter was owned by a farmer near Turin, Alberta.  He had both parents and this was their first litter.  These dogs are the epitome of their breed, extremely relaxed and loving dogs.  They are very different in behavior, but then sisters often are.

Betty

Betty is a very social dog.  She loves people and other dogs.  We sometimes have large groups over to our house and Betty works the room, so to speak.  Her main goal is to receive pleasure.  She loves to sit in my lap at night and sometimes appears to be watching TV.

Bobbie

Bobbie is much more shy that her outgoing sister.  When Betty is working the room, Bobbie usually sits by my side and is sometimes a bit nervous.  She is a very loyal dog.  Bobbie is also a natural heeler in that she walks right beside me (heels), a habit she picked up without training.  Bobbie was the first puppy I picked.  She pushed her way through all her litter mates and was pressing her forehead and snout against my leg.  She still does this.

Margie

Margie is our daughter's dog.  We adopted her from the city pound in San Antonio.  She was a gorgeous little puppy that had spent 4 weeks in a little cage.  Margie is very loyal also.  When we took our Labs to visit our daughter's dogs, Margie and Bobbie did not get along all that well.  Margie had a skin infection recently and had to wear a collar to keep her from chewing and licking her skin.
