Cedar Adirondack Chair
Low Maintenance
One of the most popular early lawn chairs was the wood Adirondack style chair with wide arms, which nicely served as a table. Some of the more innovative craftsmen bored round openings in the arms to hold tapered glasses, so they wouldn't be so easily knocked over.
The Adirondack style
Back in the early 1900's the adrirondack chair was and still is an extremely comfortable design. The back slats of the Adirondack chair had a comfortable eased angle with a corresponding slope of the seat, giving a feeling of a straight chair leaned back against a wall.
Adirondack History
First constructed in 1903 by woodworker Thomas Lee, the Adirondack -- or Westport -- chair has become a national tradition. The interest in cedar as a building material dates back even further, to an 1869 book -- Adventurers in the Wilderness -- which extolled the Adirondack timberlands, claiming the cedar-scented mountain environment would restore health.
Original Adirondack Chair
The original adironack design featured straight wooden back slats. Later, this design was altered to feature a curved back which is much more ergonomic. Reputable vendors typically sell this design, but the original design can also be obtained.
