WELCOME... These calendar pages are intended to not only give members and the public key local meeting dates (on days highlighted with yellow or gold background) but also many other goodies, from extra items on the current month calendar itself, to many upcoming meetings, events and other items for months ahead on the "Later" page, to extra Links on their own page to supplement the many links you can find through the Calgary RASC Home page.
But thats not all! Some items have extra information and even links in footnotes. Don't miss, either, an astronomy-news-on-the-web section reviewing recent and numerous archived headline-links. So hopefully you find lots of possibilities to help you in your exploring and planning through the seasons.
Much appreciation to all the members helping keep me up on things, and wishing you all bright days and dark, clear nights - Brian F    finished message - jump down to Info Index

...Part of RASC Calgary

The main Calendar pages (current and later events) are part of the larger RASC (Royal Astronomical Society of Canada) Calgary web site.   The calendar used to be called "Beyond the Event Horizon"  which name was retained through recent years. See Larry McNish's Calgary info page with map and photos new link (opens in new window)
What is RASC?
Also (recent addition) be sure to SEE RASC's National "About Us" web page (in new window) which includes an excellent list of national and centre benefits.

Added note By the way -the Calgary Science Centre where we meet (and volunteer-run telescopes for the public on many clear Friday nights) was originally the Calgary Centennial Planetarium. Read how Calgary RASC members were instrumental in Calgary having such a special facility * for young and old to enjoy and benefit from. (*The article's final page 77 is not directly linked there - to access it go here.) Also a briefer mention is in paragraph three here.

...Public welcome to meetings

Members of the public are invited to attend our general meetings (normally the 3rd Thursday of most months) at the Calgary Science Centre (location details and map) - sometimes still referred to as "The Planetarium" - and find out more about the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (RASC), enjoy a slide show and other presentations. And if you have questions about telescopes, information for youths interested in the stars, etc etc this is the place for information from friendly people with diverse firsthand experience! Most general meetings need no ticket (unless combined with a Planetarium ticketed-special), but parking has a small evening fee.

There is no General Meeting in July, August, nor in some Decembers (there IS a meeting in Dec.2003). Also note our June meeting is combined with a member BBQ and is on a Saturday, watch "June" for updates on Later Events or Current Month. On rare occassions a general meeting may be moved to a special date, so please watch for updates.

You can leave a message with any questions at (403) 237-STAR.

Also note the free public viewing most Friday nights on the CSC deck *weather permitting* (none however during late spring through summer, resumes in autumn) Friday night viewing is usually listed on the Current Month Calendar. You can phone 237-STAR and leave a message on the answering machine for more specifics, confirming times, holiday and summer closures, etc. Friday night public viewing is free, but parking has a small evening fee.

Added note By the way -the Calgary Science Centre where we meeet (and volunteer-run telescopes for the public on many clear Friday nights) was originally the Calgary Centennial Planetarium. Tours Available? - yes! Please phone 237-STAR and leave a query on the answering machine.

...FAQs about this calendar site et cetera

What is RASC?

I started looking on the Calendar pages for something but there is so much, I got overwhelmed! Is there a quick way to find stuff?

What are the little red plus signs for?

You have all sorts of symbols sprinkled all over, like stars in a globular? What are they?

You say the full moon is such-and-such date but my calendar says something else

I plan to go to a meeting you list that is way across the continent...

Where can I find out more local information?

Sometimes I surf with graphics turned off. How can I navigate these pages when the Image Map at the top doesn't show?

Some of your events use a Western Hat marker to show they occur in Calgary, but I'm from another part of the continent and the event is on here too. How come you don't use the globe "International" marker as well?

Where did the old site's name "Beyond the Event Horizon" come from?

  • What is RASC?
RASC is the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada, with centres across Canada, members young and older, amatueur astronomers and professionals, a wonderful bunch of people with regular meetings and observing groups almost year round, worldwide-used reference manuals, and star parties, and... well, for some more details start at National's About Us page, and of course attend any of the public meetings and find out for yourself. In Calgary our general meetings are at the Calgary Science Centre, see Map and details here.
Be sure to SEE RASC's National "About Us" web page which includes an excellent list of national and centre benefits recent addition

  • I started looking on the Calendar pages for something but there is so much, I got overwhelmed! Is there a quick way to find stuff?
Check the QuickHilights Page first. (linked also in the Navigation Banner at top of most pages or via Text Links List) If event or item is not there, check Current Month and Later pages, using your browser's find-in-page function if you want. If you still don't see it, I left it out on purpose:-) ...actually, contact me or one of the executive, or check the Calgary Home pages. Of course the Starseeker letter for members should be checked.
If regular searching doesn't find something, try search page

  • What are the little red plus signs for?
The ++ markers indicate recently added or revised items - handy if you are scrolling down a page and wondering what is new without having to read every line. But another great way to know what has been updated and when is the Update List. (News links on the Astronomy-Related News page are not marked on the Update List, as the most recent items are at the top of that news list. Ah, but scroll down and watch for - you guessed it - the ++ markers for older-released news items inserted recently.

  • You have all sorts of symbols sprinkled all over, like stars in a globular? What gives?
The symbols (listed here) arose from earlier versions of this calendar-site, to try help people quickly spot certain kinds of events or items. If they help, well great. If not, wear symbol-polarized sunglasses! Actually, I think they tend to be worst on the Later page, but I hope to complete turning that into a tidier tables page sometime , and if symbols are still used, they could go in their own neat column for more systematic skimming.

The opens-in-new-window symbol is just a reminder you soon won't need, but it doesn't appear (not usually at least) on the Links page, as ALL the web links there open new windows.

  •  You say the full moon is such-and-such date but my calendar says something else
The dates are for Calgary, and some plain household calendars may reference a different time zone. Same situation for some other overnight items. (Yes, UTC should stand for Universal Time Calgary, but...)

  • I plan to go to a meeting you list that is way across the continent...
Please verify with the place you are going, I can't guarantee my fingers are typing what I think they are. Or that I have the latest.

BTW, some star parties have been known to have extended dates, e.g. informal events for early arrivals. Check with their local info.

  • Where can I find out more local information?
Check the Calgary RASC Home pages; the home page there has links to diverse information. Also, see the first FAQ in case you skipped it before, it indicates you are most welcome to come to one of our general meetings and find out lots more directly from knowledgable and friendly members.

You can also leave a question at (403) 237-STAR. (Out-of-town? e-Mail either John or Brian on contacts page.)

  • Sometimes I surf with graphics turned off. How can I navigate these pages when the Image Map at the top doesn't show?
There is a text navigation page here.

Re any pre-December20002-designed pages (they have the old site name "Beyond the Event Horizon") which may be still linked into this site (gradually being removed): those pages have a list of links at the bottom of most pages (those without are "open-in-new window" pages, just close them to go back - or in Lynx text browsing use left-arrow.) Note that those older-page links normally link to other older-pages!

If you are using an older text browser, the Site Map page is handy to bookmark/mark-as-"favorite" as a central text navigation point.

  • Some of your events use a Western Hat marker to show they occur in Calgary, but I'm from another part of the continent and the event is on here too. How come you don't use the globe "International" marker as well?

Event-region marker choice, Calgary Canada or International depends on where the event - if it occurs several places - occurs closest to Calgary - where the local RASC Centre and these web pages are situated. This is so local members can quickly determine what sort of travel if any is involved. You are certainly welcome to send me a link to your event's local info-page - see Brian at contacts.

Some niceties: travel to the two observing sites around Calgary - the Eccles Ranch and Wilson Coulee Observatories, though a bit out of town, are treated as local; ...and any star parties scheduled on the moon are considered International:-)
    back to FAQ list

  • Where did the old site's name "Beyond the Event Horizon" come from?
Other than the obvious astronomical pun on events and the boundary of Black Hole stars, the name was already on the earlier events list when I took it on. I don't know its origin, but if you really want to know, contact me (Brian) and I'll track the story down.
