2004 - 2005 LEAGUE PLAYOFF TOURNAMENT
Grande Prairie - March 4th, 5th & 6th, 2005
Our hearts and thoughts are with the families of the R.C.M.P. officer’s that were killed at Maythorpe on Thursday. We were on route to Grand Prairie that day, totally unaware at that time of the tradagedy. After our long bus ride up our boys had a lot of energy to burn off which called for a swim at the hotel and then a dart fights in the parking lot. Our first game. at Grande Prairie was against the Grande Prairie Storms which we were not ready for, they won by a score of 11-0. The next game that they had lined up for us was against St. Paul which was canceled due to a lack of players. The next day we played & beat the Lloydminster Blades, what a game the was hockey fans. We shone with the goals going too twice over Christopher McKee, Devin De Kock, Kevin Cookson, Jamie Foley & Dylan Jones. Assists went to Spencer Soucy, Cody Smitten, Lyndon Clark, Brett Sparks, Steven Lingley & Christopher McKee. We won 6-4. The third game was against Fort McMurray. We started well. 4-2 going into the third period Two quick goals for Fort McMurray put both a side tie with five minutes left to play. With a lot of excitement from the stands (full house) the Fort scored the win with a 5-4 final score. Our hat trick boy of the night was Lucas Latimer with the lone other goal going to Dylan Jones. Assists going out to Christopher McKee twice, Riley Walters and Jamie Foley. With that loss to Fort McMurray there was a three way tie for second place. With Lloydminster Fort McMurray and the Polar Kings each with a win and two losses, to break the tie the league went to goals for and goals against to break the tie. So it ended with Lloydminster with a plus two, Wainwright Polar Kings with a plus one and Fort McMurray finishing in fourth with a minus four. That evening we were treated to a delicious meal at their local golf club. Bright and early Sunday morning we meet Lloydminster in the semi final. After the first period we had a two to one lead. Lloydminster stormed back in the second to tie the game. Two minute into the third period we broke the tie on a beautiful goal from Spencer Soucy. We managed to hold them off till the seven minute mark of the third when Lloydminster tie the game and a minute later came back with a power play goal to take the lead. The Polar Kings had their chances to tie the game in the latter minutes of play but came up short, with them scoring an empty netter. Our goal scorers were Cody Smitten with two, Jordan MacKay with the assists going to Ryley Johnson and Dylan Jones with three assists. Lyndon Clark sat out the last game of the season with an injury from game three with Fort McMurray. Our goalies, Chad Stankievech and Stuart Carruthers faced numerous shot this past weekend and through out the year, you did us proud boys.
What a year it has been, walk proud you boys, you all have done well. It seems that we just get started to play like a contender and the season is over. Grande Prairie Storms would like to thanks the Polar Kings for they’re strong showing against Lloydminster. It made their final game against Lloydminster like a walk in the park with a eight to one win. I would like to thank all of our fan support that we received this year for the first ever, under 16 Polar Kings. Next year there will be four more new clubs jointing the under 16 league, making it eight teams. We started a good thing here let it continue for years to come so that more players at this age have the chance to play at this level. I know we had a fantastic year full of many fond memories, with good fortune of meeting and making new friends with people from other communities.
THANK YOU:
Saturday, February 12, 2005
Here we are hockey fans at the end of
another season already. This was to be our last
two regular season games. We were warmed up and
ready to go into the first they scored their
first after some hard play. Shortly after Lyndon
Clark shot a quick one in from Brett Sparks, and
Tyler Dicker, this ended the first at 1-1.
Sliding into the second the play was fast in
which they scored their second. But not to be
beaten Brett Sparks shot a beautiful one in the
upper right assist going to Cody Smitten. At the
end of the second it was a 2-2 tie. The third
went end to end but Dylan Jones fired one from
the blue line from Jordan MacKay to equal their
third goal. After this we went 4 on 4 to break
the tie. With bated breath from the stands the
Storms got the last goal to end the game 4-3
Sunday, February 13, 2005
Even with an early start time Sunday we
managed to take storm with a surprise. In the
first period Chris Mckee scored our first goal
that was unassisted. Storm came back with in
under a minute scoring their first goal by
number 27 assisted by number 18. They kept on
bring it to us and it finally payed off when
number 15 scored assisted by #14. We bounced
back at the end of the period with a tip shot
scored by Travis Barber assisted by Steven
Lingley and Jordan Whitehead. The Storm blew out
on the ice scoring a goal right off the back #9
from 15. We fought back for half of the period
scoring our 3rd goal from
Brett Sparks assisted by Cody Smitten. The third
period was an exciting period full of
opportunities with both end but the goalies
managed to shut the gates leading the end of the
3rd scoreless. There was a 4 on 4 for five
minutes due to the tie but once again both
goalies kept the puck out. At the end of the
game the score was 3-3. #1 Stuart Carruthers
faced 57 shots. We are now finished with league
games and are looking forward to playoffs 2
weeks from now.

U16 Polar Kings vs Loydminster Blades February 5,
2005
Well hockey fans after our last snow fall we dug
ourselves out to take on the Loydminster Blades. In
the first period Jamie Foley Scored from a quick but
direct pass from Dylan Jones. This goal was a power
play goal for us just a few minutes into the game.
That was unfortunately our only goal of the game. We
tried to turn the table in the second but it wasn’t
meant to be. It quickly became a very physical game
especially in the third period. After many scuffle
we had a total of 97 minutes in the whole game in
penalties, with 3 game misconducts. With comparison
to their 70 minutes. The Blazers won 6-1. Sunday
morning we meet with Loydminster again in Wainwright
this time hoping this was a new day/new game..In the
first period they scored the first goal but Brett
Sparks answered back right away with a goal from
Kevin Cookson, Lucas Latimer. They then scored four
more to end the first 5-1 blazers. In the second
Spencer Soucy scored from Cody Smitten, Devin de
Kock. Our third goal was shorthanded, Lyndon Clark
popped one in from Brett Sparks. They continued
scoring with 5 more to end the second at 10-1. Each
team scored 1 goal in the third period ours coming
from Travis Barber, Lyndon Clark assisting. It was a
penalty filled third period, it was a rough if not
rougher game than last night’s. Final score of the
game 11-4 blazers. Come on down to cheer our first
ever Under 16 Polar King boys on. Our challengers
are the Grand Prairie Storms. See you there Saturday
February 12 at 6:45pm and Sunday February 13 at 9:45
am..
U16 POLAR KINGS vs ST. PAUL CANADIENS January 29- 2005
We have had last weekend with no hockey so we have had no games to report from this bench. But we have continued with practice in preparation for our regular Saturday/ Sunday games. Coming out of the gate in St. Paul Travis Barber snapped one in from Christopher McKee. After some hard hitting they went on to score 2, leaving the end of the first 2-1 for St. Paul. Within the first 2 minutes of period 2 Kevin Cookson shot one in from Devin de Kock. Twenty seconds later Jordan MacKay scored from Brett Sparks, Cody Smitten. They thought they could turn the table but it was not to be. On a power play Jordan MacKay scored unassisted. One minute later Lyndon Clark scored from Jordan MacKay, Dylan Jones on a power play goal as well. With 2 minutes in the second period Kevin Cookson scored with a nice direct pass from Jordon Whitehead. Ending period two 7-4 for the Polar Kings. The third period was a rougher one but Dylan Jones scored a stunner from Jamie Foley, Lyndon Clark. Our hat trick boy of the night Kevin Cookson scored from Brett Sparks to make it number nine. Seconds later Brett Sparks (a.k.a. sparky) scored himself from Cody Smitten (a.k.a. smitty). Scoring his second of the night was Spencer Soucy, Christopher McKee, Travis Barber. They then went on to score number six. Final score 11 Polar Kings - 6 St Paul. WAY TO GO TEAM. Once again we were in St. Paul to take on the Canadiens. We started the first with Jordan MacKay scoring right away with Cody Smitten assisting. Travis Barber snapped a quick one in off Christopher McKee, Spencer Soucy. On a power play Dylan Jones scored number three after a direct pass from Jamie Foley. With 20 seconds remaining in the first Lyndon Clark popped one in unassisted, making the score after the first 5-1 for the Polar Kings. We had less scoring chances in the second but Jamie Foley managed to get one in to make the score 6-2. Into the third we came out with a lot of play in their end but they turned the table to score 2 more. But we stayed on top, Jordan MacKay scored in the last second of the game on a empty net to end the game at 7-4 for the Wainwright Polar Kings. Some wise words from Grandpa Goulet "The first they came out flying, in the second they started playing their game not ours. The third was like the second, we played to them. But all in all it was a good game." Next game Saturday February 5th at Lloydminster.

LOOK WHAT THE STORM BLEW IN
On Saturday evening we took on the Grande Prairie Storms. We
came out of the gate on fire,
scoring number 1 for us was Riley Walters with Jordan Whitehead assisting. Play was even across the line in the first. With bated breath we thought we had ended the first in a tie with seconds remaining they scored their second. Ending the first 2-1. Into the second they poured their juice on to score 3 more. Christopher McKee came through for us scoring number 2 with Spencer Soucy, Jordan Whitehead assisting. This was scored on our only power play goal of the game. End of the second was 5-2. In the third period we held our own however they managed to score 3 more. With only 3 minutes remaining Jamie Foley sunk one in from Lyndon Clark, Jamie Foley. Closing the game 8-4 for the Grande Prairie Strom.
Under 16 Polar Kings vs St Paul Canadiens January 16,2005
This team we played once before in Wainwright so we knew coming into the game we were a much smaller team, but we were not going to back down. The first period was a non-scoring one. Sliding into the second they scored the first goal of the night. Spencer Soucy answered back with a goal just inside their blue line from partner in crime Christopher McKee. A short time later the almighty Cody Smitten scored assisted by Christopher McKee. End of the second period the score was 2-1. They came back with one but Jordan MacKay put a stop to that with our third goal, unassisted. Lyndon Clark marked up number 4 for us, Jamie Foley, Riley Johnson assisting, Once again Spencer Soucy saw a opening and put one in to make it number 5, Jordan Whitehead, Riley Walters assisted. Lyndon Clark shot one in on a empty net to make the final score of the game 6-3 for the Polar Kings. Next weekend we have no games scheduled so our next league game is on January 29th in St Paul. I will keep you posted.
Happy Birthday Greetings going out to Travis Barber and Lucas Latimer. In the winter weather we braved it and we were in a exhibition tournament at Lloydminster. In our first game we played Edmonton’s MLAC Elite, this team we played in Edmonton after Christmas. We had Riley Johnson and Jordan Whitehead out due to injury. At 12:57 in the first Jordan MacKay scored on a sneaky pass from Jamie Foley. Jordan MacKay scored again a short time later from Travis Barber. This lead us right into period 2, due to time restrictions we went from a 20 minute first period to a 15 minute second with no break. Our goalie Chad Stankievech did a outstanding job stoning many shots. We had one goal in the second from Lyndon Clark, Lucas Latimer and Brett Sparks drew on the assists. They caught up in the second with one ahead as well leaving the score going into the break between second and third 4-3. Two minutes into the third Christopher McKee snapped one in from the ever dangerous Devin deKock. At this time with the score being close the referee was in the wrong place at the wrong time getting clipped from the side from a very big strong Edmonton player. He was flattened on the ground unable to get up. After sometime the ambulance was called and he was transported to the hospital. Word has it he badly bruised some ribs. A big Thank-you going out to Christopher McKee’s aunt { Wainwright R.N.}
For assisting in his aide. You must take it easier on those Ref’s boys. After all the excitement play continued {a fresh ref was brought in to tame the lions}. Brett Sparks took this opportunity to pop one in with Lyndon Clark and Jiving Jordan MacKay assisting. One minute later Dylan Jones put one in from Brett Sparks and Lyndon Clark. They had 3 goals in the third to leave the score 8-6 MLAC Elite. With the Grand Prairie Storms blowing in we did not do as well this game. They have a very big and strong team with each player shooting well and checking at all times. These players have played together many years, instinctively knowing each others positions. Final score of this game was 8-1,with the loner going out to Kevin Cookson {i.e .cookie} with Jordan MacKay assisting. The third & final game was against the St. Albert Flyers. The first period was a non scoring one. Our first goal came from Brett Sparks from Cody Smitten. The second goal came from Lyndon Clark assisted by Jamie Foley. Number 3 was from Spencer Soucy assisted by Christopher McKee. They scored 4 this period leaving the score 4-3 after the second. The third period was a rough one with many penalties handed out to them. Travis Barber nipped one in from Lyndon Clark, Dylan Jones. One minute later Christopher McKee scored assisted by Lyndon Clark. The final score was 6-5 for the flyers. Next game Saturday January 15 6:45 PM Wainwright where we take on the Grande Prairie Storms SEE YOU THERE.

it 5 for us from Lyndon Clark, we lost out to them with the final
score being 9-5. Our next game is at Lloydminster Friday night where
we take on another inner city Edmonton team as part of a 3 day
tournament. We will keep you posted.
The next morning we were at it again for our second game of the weekend. They knew we were to be taken serious from our performance the day before. We really picked up on our shots on goal having 12 shots to there 5 at the end of the first. They shot one in ending the first 1-0. Number 2 for them went in on the inside of the second on a power play goal. Play was quite consistent with each team only having a few shots net in the second. Score at the end of the 2nd was 2-0 for Fort McMurray. Our patience was put to the test in the 3rd. With many penalties on both sides of the line and with Cody Smitten missing his chance to get us with in one goal on a penalty shot before they scored their 3rd and final goal of the day. After all the confusion of the game was settled we had 28 minutes in penalties with 1 game misconduct to their 22 minutes. We increased our shots on net by 80%. On the way home we had increased excitement with a low battery in Boyle, Thank-you to Gibson’s & Diversified bus for the boost. Our faith in human kindness was renewed. A big Polar King Thank-you going out to the McKee’s for a wonderful evening of great food & fun to celebrate the season. Over the holidays we will be playing in Edmonton in a tournament, I will keep you posted in the new year. MERRY CHRISTMAS TO EVERYONE FROM THE U16 POLAR KINGS COACHING STAFF, PARENTS AND PLAYERS.
