"Viewers watching figure skating championships on television often wonder how the skaters can “do all that on a 1/4 inch blade.” Donna Ashton-Good, Canadian figure skating coach for over 25 years, makes the sport of ice skating seem a little less daunting here. After showing how to select appropriate skates and get the proper fit, the program introduces five beginning skaters, ranging in age from four-to-fortysomething, who learn everything from moving slowly forward to backward figure-eights. Although the video is only a half hour, there is too much content to digest in one sitting and viewers will best benefit by watching and trying the skills in short chunks. I was pleased to see a section on “falling and getting up” appearing right after the beginning section on “first steps”. Many sports videos forget to take into consideration that beginners are going to “biff” it more often than not, and knowing how to recover from these mishaps is essential. The simple outline and clear demonstrations of a wide variety of ice skating maneuvers will inspire viewers of all ages."
Recommended three stars out of four.

I was quite impressed with the way the topics are presented and also with the students who picked up and skated so well in such a short period of time. A scary new challenge made into a fun and exciting adventure for the students.

"Professional skater Donna Ashton-Good demonstrates elementary techniques of ice skating for adults and teens. The Canadian instructor explains differences in hockey and figure skates and talks about the inner and outer edges of the skate blade before the instruction session, which takes place in an indoor skating rink. Beginning with marching steps and arms extended, student skaters imitate the teacher’s gliding motions. As the skaters gain confidence, they learn to execute stroke, glide, cross-cut, and backward skating movements. Captioned screen titles and performance skating footage accompany each stage of the instruction in this well-thought-out presentation."

I have no skating background to speak of, and your lesson demonstrations and the sequence for instruction were a real eye opener for me. I may be able to help the kids a little bit now.

"Donna Ashton-Good uses her more than 25 years worth of experience as a professional ice skating coach to clearly teach the basicsof ice skating. With the help of some of her students, ranging in age from four to adult, Ashton-Good covers everything from proper fit of the ice skates to some of the more difficult techniques involved with skating backward. Each new technique is first introduced as a set of written instructions narrated for viewers followed by an actual demonstration by the students. The suggested use of a helmet for safety is given to beginning ice skaters. The most basic ice skating elements are presented first, including starting, stopping, an exercise for balance and how to get up after having fallen. The more advanced techniques such as skating around curves, in circles, and doing backward crosscuts are also covered. The information presented will be helpful to beginning ice skaters of all ages. A worthwhile purchase for collections in need of instructional ice skating videos."
