Welcome to my page of Wheat Weaving, Corn Dollies and Straw Work
My name is Grethe Jensen and my hobby is Wheat Weaving
Wheat weaving is an ancient craft that has almost died out.
Some of us are keeping this craft alive by networking with
other wheat weavers and learning as much as we can from each other.
Wheat weaving and plaiting of straw and grass for useful
purposes have been known worldwide since the birth of mankind.
The designs vary from country to country but the underlying folk
beliefs and worship of the fertility of the earth is similar.
Primitive farmers did not understand the process of germination
of seeds and associated new growth with magic, done by a harvest
spirit who lived in the grain. As the grain was harvested the
spirit retreated into the last bit still standing. This last
bundle was plaited into a knot or figure and carefully preserved
through the winter as a place of rest for the harvest spirit. Its
seed were sown with the next crop to transfer the spirit from one
year to the next. The practice of wheat weaving continued long
after the reason for it had been forgotten. Plaiting became a
handicraft pursued for its own sake with the old patterns being
handed down.
I teach classes in my home town of Valleyview and elsewhere if
invited.
