1800 YELLOWHEAD PASSPhoto is Yellowhead Pass

The Leather Pass aka Tete Jaune Pass aka Yellowhead Pass was discovered last century by the Iroquois and Metis.  Pierre Hatsination a Metis is credited with the discovery but others likely preceded him.

A fleet of H.B.C. boats on the Saskatchewan River bringing a load of furs from Fort Edmonton.

Fort Woop-up was built in 1869 a few miles from Lethbridge, Alberta by Joe Healy and Al Hamilton, of Fort Brenton, Montana suppliers of the whisky trade.

1891 FORT EDMONTON AREA PIONEERS Photo is Fort Edmonton Alberta Hotel
Settlers who have been in the Edmonton, St. Albert or Fort Saskatchewan areas of the North West Territories before 1883.
They are grouped in front of the Alberta Hotel. Most of these men were  poor when they died.  Lawrence Garneau is center row second from the left.
 

1900 GALICIAN SETTLEMENTPhoto is Galician Settlement
A typical Austro-Hungarian Galician Settlement. These experienced wheat growers were in such demand that Canada paid a brokers bonus of $2.00 per person and $5.00 for each family head to entice them to Canada.  The French in the Edmonton area however were not pleased with the infusion of these non French farmers.  Tha Salzl family were Austro-Hungarian.

The Minnow is a steamer that ran from Fort Edmonton to Prince Albert (Saskatchewan) on the North Saskatchewan River.

A typical wagon train from the Dakota's heading north to homestead in Alberta.  It is noteworthy that Europeans and Americans used wagons and oxen where as Canadians used Red River carts and horse power.
