This is a typical Galician Settlement, Austro-Hungarian peasants,
skilled at growing wheat. They were so highly regarded by Canada that brokers
were paid a bonus of $2.00 per person and $5.00 per family head of house to
entice them to Canada. The French at Morinville, Alberta however were not pleased
to have these people in their community, even if they were Roman Catholics. The
Salzl were Austro-Hungarian and settled in Morinville, Alberta. This photo however is from Manitoba.
