These were considered old timer settlers who were in the Fort Edmonton region including Strathcona, St. Albert and Fort Saskatchewan, prior to 1883. 

Lawrence Garneau, Metis, (1840-1921) of the Garneau District is in middle row second from the left.
(II)-Jim Gibbons, Metis (1839-1928) back row farthest left, said to have arrived Edmonton 1865

They had considerable prestige and a tremendous social influence, most of them were poor when they died.  Lawrence Garneau was an exception among the group as he was considered fairly wealthy.  He is located center row 2nd from left.  They are posing in front of the Alberta Hotel, Fort Edmonton.
