Presentations and Workshops for
Students, Teachers, and Writers

PRESENTATIONS BY HAZEL HUTCHINS:

I have done the following sessions many times and will be happy to provide you with comments from teachers and other educational professionals.

Presentations to Students in ECS to Grade 6 last up to one hour and work best with between 60 and 100 students. I can do four sessions in a day. We talk about becoming a writer, the writing process, getting ideas and rewriting. Copies of different drafts and objects related to the research of my own story ideas accompany me, along with other items of interest. I read from my books and questions are encouraged. I'm not a performer but I do my best to keep everything entertaining. We generally have a good time!

Workshops for Students in grades 4 to 6 last two hours and work best with 20 - 25 students. I can do two a day. The most popular workshop is called "What If" and deals with writing fantasy stories in a real life setting. After some initial discussion, students do their own writing with guided exercises on plotting, character, dialogue and... what if...?

Teachers' Convention Workshops are just under two hours in length. This is for teachers who want author hints on how to keep their students interested in writing, as well as teachers who like to experiment with writing themselves. During the workshop I show how fantasy, and the participants own writing abilities, can enhance their students' writing experience. Exercises on plot, character and dialogue are done under some very supportive coaching - and I'm always amazed by what turns up!

Adult Writing Workshops (for people who want to write for the children's market themselves) last between four and six hours and work best with between 10 and 20 participants. They involve discussion and exercises covering both pre-teen novels and picture books. Rewriting techniques, presentation of manuscripts, marketing and helpful organizations are also discussed.
