Recycle!
Sunday, April 22 • Service at 10am
Honpa Temple • 3611 Forestry Ave. S. • 328.7909
April 22 is EARTH DAY. We will be taking the temple’s recyclables to the bottle depot.
We encourage students, with their parents, to collect bottles and cans from their homes, acquaintances, even door to door and bring them to our drive. The students will vote on a charity to receive the money collected. We will discuss DANA (generosity or giving) tying in the concept of donating to a cause, and recycling or “giving back” to the earth.

Nature Walk
Sunday, May 6 • Meet at 1:30pm (walk 2-3pm)
Helen Schuler Coulee Centre • Indian Battle Park
This tour is open to the public and is a great theme for our class. Families can be refreshed by the new sights and sounds of spring, and be reminded of the interdependence of all beings. Remember to have appropriate footwear, a hat and water.

Summary of recent events:

Hanamatsuri, Buddha's Birthday
Service was held Sunday, April 8, 2007, 2 pm
Lethbridge Buddhist Temple. 1303 - 13 Street North

HANAMATSURI, or "Flower Festival", commemorates the birth of Siddhartha Gautama. Siddhartha became enlightened as Sakyamuni Buddha, marking the release of sentient beings from suffering and sorrow.

Children and youth participated in the offering of flowers and pouring sweet tea over a statuette of the infant Buddha. There was also an infant presentation (Hatsumairi) in which parents formally present their child to the Buddha and members of the temple. Dharma activities and games were held for children and youth downstairs during the latter half of the service. Dinner followed the service. Many thanks to organizers and preparers.

Hoonko Activities (poster)

This is the most important festival celebrated on the Jodo Shin calendar. It marks the day that Shinran Shonin passed away in 1262 at the age of 90, after spending a fruitful life spreading the Nembutsu teachings. Our Memorial Service for Shinran Shonin gives us an opportunity to express gratitude to the founder of the Shin Buddhist tradition. It is also a time when we can reflect once again upon the teachings of Shinran with deep appreciation in our hearts and resolve to dedicate ourselves to the service of others and to the making of a friendlier and happier world for all mankind.

Sunday, January 21, 2007, 2:00 p.m. (service)
