BCC Update, March, 2004

March is the month of SPRING HIGAN and it is about that time of the year to feel a warmer wind and sunshine. I know most of you are busy in preparing for Keirokai or Bazaar as well as Higan Service.

We BCC as well as BCA were deeply saddened to hear that Rev. Kenryu Tsuji passed away on Feb 26 in California. He was one of the four ministers (other three Senseis are Shinjo Ikuta, Yutetsu Kawamura, and Ryokan Nishimura) who had shared the Nembutsu with the scattered Buddhists across Canada during the postwar period in the history of Buddhist Churches of Canada.

Originally from Mission, B.C. he was the first Nisei Kaikyoshi in Canada. He started his missionary in Vancouver in 1941, then he was instrumental in establishing Slocan Buddhist Temple during the relocation. Later moved to the east to start Toronto, Montreal, and Hamilton Buddhist Churches.

He became the first Nisei Bishop in BCA in 1968 and demonstrated the leadership and guidance to many temples and churches in this north American continent. He worked about 60 long years before retirement. For those who wish to express sympathy, here is Mrs. Sakaye Tsuji's address: 1154 Balclutha Dr. Foster City, CA 94404 Tel 650 570 5730
