The goal
of this program is to significantly reduce the abusive behaviour
of adult males in intimate relationships. Alberta Health became ongoing funders of the program in November 1992 which enabled the
program to offer five-16 week psycho/educational therapy groups on an annual
basis. This allows us to serve up to 60 men and their partners yearly. The
groups are interventive and preventive in nature and
deal with both the perpetrator and their victims of abuse in an attempt to
disrupt the cyclical effects that it can have.
Follow
up sessions are held throughout the year for those men completing the program
to follow their progress and offer continuing support.
The
Nexus program is designed to address the needs of women who have been abused
and/or are abusive in intimate relationships. The format is a combination of
group therapy and educational information.
Sessions are facilitated by a qualified professional. Participants meet for one night per week for
two hours. The program is 9 weeks in
length.
Follow
up sessions are held throughout the year for those women completing the program
to follow their progress and offer continuing support.
The Live
and Learn program is designed to address the needs of children ages 6 –11 who
have witnessed abuse in the family system.
At least one parent/guardian must have attended one of the John Howard
programs for domestic abuse/anger management.
The program is 8 weeks in length.
Children meet for 1 ˝ hours once a week.
The
Couples Enrichment program has been designed as a follow-up program for
Renaissance and Nexus participants. The
focus of “Couples Enrichment” is building positive relationships by learning
and using skills in self-assessment and communication. Although partners attend the program as a
couple, a strong theme is personal development for each individual participant.
