History of the  John Howard Society

The John Howard Society of Canada was formed in 1940, in

cooperation with the Federal Government.  The Society was

named after the 18th century English philanthropist, humanitarian

and prison reformer John Howard.  Presently there are about

          60 offices across Canada.

The John Howard Society of Alberta was formed in 1949 as a

           non-governmental, community-based agency composed of

Alberta citizens who are concerned with the problem of crime

and its prevention in their communities.  There are presently

6 local offices and a provincial office.

The John Howard Society of Grande Prairie began as a committee

in 1978, gained district status in 1979, and was incorporated in 1986.
