John Howard Society of
cooperation
with the Federal Government. The Society
was
named after
the 18th century English philanthropist, humanitarian
and prison
reformer John Howard. Presently there
are about
60 offices across
The
John Howard Society of
non-governmental,
community-based agency composed of
and its
prevention in their communities. There
are presently
6 local offices and a
provincial office.
The
John Howard Society of
in 1978, gained
district status in 1979, and was incorporated in 1986.
The overall objective is the prevention
of crime.
This is accomplished through:
1.
Providing services to prisoners, ex-offenders and
their families which promote their rehabilitation and re-integration into the
community.
2.
Developing and implementing public education
programs to help deter young people from criminal activity and to encourage
public responsibility for the Criminal Justice System and its reform.
3.
Developing and delivering programs to those affected
by crime and the Criminal Justice System.
4.
Researching issues, preparing briefs and organizing
activities which will result in the legal and Administrative reform of the Criminal
Justice System in order to improve its effectiveness and humaneness.
