22:Tutus © wood engraving (ed. 75) image: 5 x 5 in. $100.00 (go to "Hi There" for purchase information)
The idea for this print came from Peter Lawrence, chairman of the Society of Wood Engravers in England. I was asked to participate in a Society project which was to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the revival of the Society. Each invited wood engraver was to choose a number from 1 through 25 and was asked to create a wood engraving, on a block 5 x 5 inches, whose image in some way symbolizes the number they chose. I considered choosing the number two because the human face and body includes many components which are in pairs and I wanted to use the human figure. Then Peter asked if I had thought of doubling that number, and there it was, Desmond Tutu! In the end, after numerous sketches, I tipped my hat to Edgar Degas (one of the many artists I admire) by including a reference to his sculpture, "the Little Dancer". Each artist was allowed to print an edition which included a portion for their own use, but were asked to not release the image until after the suite of prints were published by the Society. "Box 25" is now available through the Society of Wood Engravers as a boxed set of amazing and creative prints.
