The stories and myths about Mounties, igloos, Eskimos, the "True North strong and free" and the laid-back socially tolerant Canadian are the tip of the Canadian myth iceberg. There are other myths which circulate "south of the border" about the cold. The American weathermen on TV are often pointing accusing fingers northward and blaming Canada for severe winters in the United States. I used to hear things like, "It's so cold in Canada that ... (followed by an outrageous punch line). I didn't believe any of these cold myths until one spring day my emergency brake handle snapped off in my hand. "It's so cold in Canada that plastic becomes brittle and shatters!"
