The stack of comic books, stored under the bed in a cardboard box, held exciting stories of heroes who lived daily adventures. These comic books were also the motivation to read and an inspiration to draw. The adventures in the stories were acted out in the neighbourhood on warm afternoons in summer or in snow forts, built in vacant lots after school in the winter. The heroes in those books became real people in these neighbourhood dramas. Decades later the child has grown old and the cardboard box full of comic books has probably financed some entrepreneur's winter home in the Bahamas. But the child deep inside the old reader still looks for the heroes he felt were real. Where are they now? What would they look like? Would they still have their old costumes? He decides to search for them.

A retired Betty Boop would keep her bow shaped pattern of lipstick into the autumn of her life. The lipstick would run along the crevices around her mouth and would get rubbed onto her false teeth. Fashions are hard to give up as we age. Just like habits.

The Lone Ranger was never without his mask. When he could no longer holler "Hi-Ho Silver!" in a steady voice; when he could no longer take a 10 or 20 foot leap onto the saddle without damaging something valuable; he must have reluctantly removed his mask and retired. There would certainly be a permanent indication of that mask tattooed, by the weather and the years, to his face.

"Sgt. Preston of the Mounted (ret)" © coloured woodengraving (ed. 15) image: 7 x 5 in. $300.00 (go to "Hi There" for purchase information)

Retirement would force the active life of a hero like Sgt. Preston of the Mounted to come to an end. It would be hard to make that transition so I figured a hobby horse would help with the adjustment.
